For those of you who do DIY laminate flooring, do you have a preferred brand/style? I'm going to be transitioning from glue strip Allure and looking for ease of installation and how well it will hold up. Would prefer something I can buy in stock at Lowes or HD. --71.28.xx.xxx

You should use 12mm think laminate for easy install and longer use. And go with the click system. Also get a good underlayment to suit your needs. Moisture, Sound, etc. --47.155.xx.xxx

After installing it in many houses, I can only tell you this: don’t. It gets ruined by moisture and humidity. If I had to do it all over again, I would have installed luxury vinyl planks. They’re not affected by moisture. --40.136.xx.xxx

The Lifeproof line at home depot looks good.

It past my scratch test compared to what we used. May try next time.

With covid my brand went way up to over 5.oo a sq ft

Lifeproof stayed about same at 2.00 sg ft. For the good stuff.

Anyone use glue down?

My old installer of 20 years retired. My new one recommends this option. Use a much cheaper LVP. So overall price about the same.

I am at least going to try next time in bathrooms where I need more waterproofing.

Pros= easier to repair, not chance of unclicking. And more waterproof. toilet overflow or stuff like dog pee. Cant get under the LVP and just sit there. May not damage LVP. But not healthy.

I agree with using vinyl planks rather than cheaper laminate.

Also, caulk all around the seam between the floor and baseboards - to stop spills from getting under the baseboards where it can't be cleaned up. --68.229.xxx.xxx

Robert,

Did you mean to say 12 mil wear layer rather than 12mm thickness of entire plank???

On issue of laminate vs. waterproof vinyl planks as I have heard it called, I also believe the increased cost of the waterproof vinyl planks is definitely worth it. I would not choose the ordinary old style laminate any more.
