Had an eviction on Monday. On Tuesday the front door was kicked in and oil spilled on furnace and down the sink.

Yesterday at Lowes former tenant who was evicted on the 14th of July had a shouting match etc. with our handyman. Blames him for getting evicted.

Is this what is happening? Nobody wants to assume responsibility for paying rent, even when they get stimulus money and/or work. --24.233.xxx.xx

Those renters who would have not paid in the past (well before Covid) are primarily the ones now taking advantage or the government's carte blanche to just stay free.

Nightly on the news, they are BEGGING Landlords to take the 100% back rent payout grants and even several months forward. Nobody wants it! The reason is simple, you can apply, but as a tenant, you have to SIGN documents (under penalty of perjury) proving Covid related non-payment AND you have to be LOW income. Not many are qualifying. So they extend the moratorium to give tenants more time to qualify when they know full well they can't qualify. It's all so stupid.

It so reminds me of the Civil War when armies would take over plantations to house their troops. I can't understand why our judicial system can't solve this takeover of private property without compensation. --72.207.xx.xxx

Thank you all. I came here to ask a question but started with this post.

After many years, I have one of your tenants, a 22 year old that is simply taking advantage of the system...a system that our grandparents would never agree with...yet it represents the new America.

Each comment I read had similarities to my situation and Sorta Blonde's explanation also made me feel good about my decision.

I decided last week that I would not accept tax payer's money. The tax payers gave that money to help families, or people who really were suffering a loss. My job is to make certain those funds are not given to the fraudulent. I am the only person who can see that my tenant is a lazy, beer drinking, good shoe wearing, sleeping all day, candle open window smoking, carry out food grabbing, fake. I am the only one who protects the tax payer.

I can't wait to stand before a judge and say. "Your honor, my tenant is not for whom those funds were intended. It is my responsibility to the Tax Payers to only accept funds intended to help those who are truly in need".

My responsibility is more valuable than money. --108.28.xx.xxx

And I can’t wait for a judge to tell you “wait there was rental aid money available, your tenant went to the trouble of filling out all the stuff and applying, got approved and you still refused to accept payment and now are trying to evict for nonpayment?

Dismissed. Take the money. --98.198.xxx.xxx

The part that the lawmakers don't seem to understand is that any good tenant, laid off or not, will have already had contact with their LL over a year ago and paid them something or moved. Think about it-you gave them an extra $600 a week and then said we will give you back the taxes you paid. Many of us worked through it and we didn't get our taxes refunded. Now we are giving you programs to pay your rent and utilities that we have been telling you about for months. Guess where that money is coming from? The government isn't offering to pay my mortgage.

If more of the lawmakers relied on property for income, it would change. --73.230.xxx.xx

I am with you MC,

I find it hard to understand that someone can go a year without finding work or any other possible manner to pay at least part of rent.

Even the most unqualified technical applicant can dig a ditch somewhere. As long you are not hooked on Meth, I can find something that will allow you to earn a dollar. Mowing a lawn isn't technical nor glamourous, but it has to get done --24.101.xxx.xxx
