I just got on the waiting list for a puppy, yet to be born. The breeder has an interesting way to screen prospects.

First, you look at his website with all the information. Next you send him an email or text to say you are interested,

Then he calls and gives a phone interview.

If he is satisfied with the phone interview, there is an extensive application to be filled out that is on his website, but it can not be accessed without a password. Unless he is happy with the phone interview, you don't get the password and can not apply for a puppy.

Next the online application is reviewed and he decides whether or not the hopeful buyer gets on the waiting list for a puppy. After that, pretty standard, pay the deposit and sign the purchase contract.

I was interested in the idea of only making the application available with a password to those who appear to be promising.

Probably there is a violation of Fair Housing in there somewhere. --76.178.xxx.xxx

So if you didn't have to send a photo and he didn't ask your race, then there is no evidence of discrimination since you don't know what his criteria is. What did you say right and what did you not say. I applied for a puppy and had to send my photo and answer some questions. I was accepted to get a puppy but then had to decline as a little local soul needed to be rescued instead. Cutest thing. He's the fat little rat terrier that I have been wanting since I was 6 and has some poodle hair. I saved him and he saved me after my other rescue boy died unexpectedly from congestive heart failure. If it wasn't for covid keeping me out of the vets, he would still be here possibly. Lost another due to not being able to go in to the vets with her. --108.24.xx.xx

Sounds like a responsible breeder. Just like a responsible landlord knows how important screening is…shows they care about their merchandise and not just making a buck. --75.89.xxx.xxx

I use a digital application that’s only able to be accessed with a link, so it’s a similar concept. I only allow people that pre-qualify to apply. Back in the paper application days it used to be a huge pet peeve of mine for lookie lous to request an application knowing they had no interest in moving forward. It was a waste of resources that I’ve since eliminated. --172.58.xxx.xxx

I only communicate with prospects on email. I ask questions and set up an appointment. IF they actually appear, they get the tour while I watch them. Then I give a paper application on the way out to anyone who asks (no charge). Most never return them after reading what I want to know. The ones who are really interested fill them out completely and some even bring picture ID, proof of employment, bank account, etc. to the viewing. I put all the requirements in the AD the smart ones are ready to show their stuff. Those are my favorites. Lookie Lous aren't a problem and no shows don't bother me since the houses are directly behind me. I can just sit home and wait. No show equals no reschedules. Rented my last house to a pair of brothers who did all the right stuff and signed the Agreement on the spot. Came with copies of everything and CASH. They have been here 10 months now and no problems. --72.207.xx.xxx

[[[[[.......What kind of dog are you getting?......]]]]]]

An Epagneul Breton. I'm on the list for first pick male, if there is one born. It's wait and see but I am already on the waiting list for the next litter if there is no male in this litter.

Plenty, I've heard people say that it is more difficult to qualify for a puppy than it is to adopt a child. Which I am sure is said as a joke. Surely it is a lot harder to qualify to adopt a child (I hope)

The world would be a better place if parents had to pass some sort of screening before they were allowed to have a human child. Or at least pass some parenting classes or anger management or some thing similar. --76.178.xxx.xxx

Oregon,

Looks like a great breed! Going hunting?

Interesting concept with the password.

I cannot recall any Fair Puppy Laws.

Gentle reminder for those pre-screening: you must still allow everyone to submit an application...even after you don’t like their prescreen.

My Fair Housing director says the law is clear- LL cannot deny or block anyone from APPLYING.

Be careful out there!

BRAD

(PS we bring in a lot of app fees from folks who ignore our instructions and basic checklist but apply anyway with evictions, etc) --73.102.xxx.xxx

That was something I was thinking about as well. I don't want people applying and paying the fee until I've actually done a showing for them.

Perhaps if you had the application on a totally separate webpage from the prescreening form, it might accomplish that. --72.188.xxx.xxx
