SQL is a programming language used by computer data bases to retrieve, add or update information. I could go into exhaustive detail on the subject as I have been using it in my day job since 2004, but I'll spare you the headaches. Just know that it's part of the "back end" that users almost never see unless there's a glitch that doesn't have proper error handling programmed for the given scenario, so instead of gracefully saying something like "Oops, there's an error with your request" it just pukes its guts onto your browser window.
