tenant wants Ring (by J [FL]) Posted on: Jul 18, 2021 12:53 PM
Message:

New T who has not moved in yet has asked if it's okay for him to install a Ring system.

Is there still a fire hazard from this product? And does installation do any damage to the house (I've never used these products).

And what about the different products -- Ring Doorbell vs. Ring Camera, etc. ... are there any of these that I should not allow based on possible damage, etc.?

Thanks.

I would make sure he understood that anything physically attached to the property is to remain with the property after he vacates. I believe Ring doorbells use the house's doorbell wires. Doorbell wires are typically solid 18 gauge copper and are extremely fragile. If he tries to take the Ring doorbell with him when he goes, he's likely going to leave you with wiring that's too short to install a replacement doorbell with. --73.177.xxx.xx

Once i had an issue. Tenant removed my door bell and installed the ring. When they removed their ring they did not put back my door bell and cut the wires off so short and so far back into the brick that no one else can install. Door bell replacement are $11! --172.56.xx.xxx

When used correctly those Ring door bells are a blessing. However most tenants when at home don't have their cellphone glued to their hip. So someone pushing the button at the door will do so in vain because the tenants will be somewhere not getting an alert.

Ring has a system that operates with rechargeable batters or wires. The door bell requires two small screws. --107.242.xxx.xx

Does anyone know if "Ring Camera" also utilizes the doorbell wires or if it is something separate? I'm not familiar with how these product work. --72.188.xxx.xxx

My ring knockoff can be either hardwired or used with rechargeable lithium batteries. I haven't bothered to hardwire it yet. It works well with the lithium batteries. holds a charge for about a month or so. this is with constant activity/recording going in and out of the house --72.231.xxx.xx

When you tenants (born with a silver spoon in their mouth) want to upgrade my thermostat, door bell or anything else electronic, When Something Goes Wrong the tenants want me to send out my repair guy and foot the bill.

Two tenants purchased on the Home Shopping Network new e-thermostats and installed them. Then when a battery had to be changed or the season switched from hot to cold, the tenants couldn't get the system working. So I had to send my A/C guy there. The tenants lost the instructions on how to program the thermostat to our system and my A/C guy doesn't deal with cheap imports. So after a $100 service call and a thermostat replacement, I was out $200 bucks.

The same was with a Ring knock off door bell. And another time it was a sprinkler timer.

I have Ring cameras. The doorbell one uses rechargeable batteries. You just pop 'em out 2-3 times a year and plug 'em in for an hour or so.

Maybe there is a hard wired version?

I never heard of a fire hazard, but if mine hasn't caught fire here in the desert it's probably safe. Ours is in a spot that is shaded.

I like the Ring. Ours is at our front gate where we don't have wires. Works great, even in our high heat. When it activates we can view it on our tablets or smart phone, and we can even talk on it. We have the doorbell add-on at the house so in addition to a chime on the tablets it actually rings like a regular doorbell.

We get so few unexpected visitors that when the bell goes off we jump out of our skin and have a chineese fire drill!

"OMG there's someone at the gate! Ouick, man the battlements!" "WTH could they want? Who would come clear out here without calling?" "Ma, find my teeth!"

"Oh, nevermind, it's just a kid selling magazines." LOL ;) :)

As for installation it is just two screws iirc.

Let the tenants have one. I wouldn't even have asked if I was a tennant, I'd have just done it. LOL

Battery or hardwired is an option. The hardwired uses wires from your old doorbell and power from your doorbell transformer. Some transformers don't supply enough power. --72.49.xxx.xxx

Thanks. I need to clarify exactly what the T is getting. I may allow the battery powered version. I don't want the hardwired one being installed. --72.188.xxx.xxx

I find that these and ADT temp controls are lousy, wireless or wired the HVAC controls hardly work correctly, I charge a 75bux and up service to restore so you would want to add a 4-500 bux equipment removal fee to the movein funds needed. --76.188.xxx.xxx
