On a water heater at the top of the cold water in and hot water out there are small inserts with a very small rubber flap. What is their purposse?
I saw some light blue thread tape at the plumbing supply store. The clerk said this is better that the white teflon. True or false?
Thanks for always being a wealth of knowlwdge.

Those special water heater nipples with blue tops are dielectric heat trap nipples. They improve energy efficiency of a water heaters by reducing heat loss through inlet and outlet pipes. However after much use the ceramic balls that prevent back flow of the cold and hot water wears down. Then the "balls" in those nipples no longer prevent back flow and will make nose. In time you may need to replace those nipples.
Since most of my installs use copper pipes, instead of those dielectric nipples, I use brass nipples, of a longer length.

BUY-BUY-BUY!
I started using the blue tape last year. I was at the actual plumbing supply to buy pressure valves and the guy recommended it. I forget how much, couple bucks a roll.
HOW did I ever go so long using the crappy white tape?
It is night and day!
Put three wraps, which is about 8 with the thin stuff. I've probably done 200 connections this year with the mobile builds, and not one leak. --47.216.xx.xxx |
