The dishwasher finally died on a house I have owned for 18 years. It is the original dishwash from when I purchased the house. Now the saga begins. 2 delivery attempts latter and still no success.

First “standard” 24-inch-wide dishwasher are not standard height. This was the lesson from my first delivery. The dishwasher was too tall , by fractions of an inch. FYI Best Buy is delivering/installing the dishwashers. Installation price was reasonable and I assumed they are well versed in installing dishwashers since they sell and install them.

Tenant sends me measurements for the opening and also the brand of the current dishwasher. So, I spend quite a bit of time looking at dishwashers on Best Buy site. Yep, they vary (fractions of inches) in height , mostly by brand. So, I purchase the same brand & SHORTEST dishwasher available. Tenant said the opening measurement was 33 ¼ inch tall, shortest available dishwasher is 33 3/8 tall. I assume 2 things; tenant measurement is off at least 1/8 of an inch and also height is adjustable at least 1/8 of an inch.

Tennent schedules delivery. Today tenant calls and another install fail…too tall. He tells me technician said when they installed the dishwasher they installed the tile around the dishwasher.

Also, technician said that he could not turn the turn off water valve. It needs to be replaced. The valve is made of cooper and the current code is for steel (cost $125 to replace).

Thoughts? I do plan to go in person for the 3rd install attempt.

Has anyone measured the hithe of the old dishwasher that was removed. It sounds as if they were able to remove the old DW with the tile being around where it sits.

Are there adjustable legs on the new one?

What type of counter top is in the home? --73.120.xx.xxx

Steel valve required? Sounds bogus. But you do need a working valve.

Two options: Unscrew countertop and lift, or remove tile in front of dishwasher, then reinstall. Lifting the countertop is generally much easier. --69.80.xx.xxx

A longer stainless steel flex line is easy to install where can buy 1.8 M or 6' Then the line is threaded to shut valve then threaded to dishwasher. A stainless steel flex line makes the installation easy where everything fits. Most building supply stores carry special stainless steel braided flex lines. If the shut off is not close to dishwasher then can drill a hole in tile then run the line to the shut off. View some videos on You Tube on how to install a dishwasher where can see a few different installation methods. Have installed many different types of dishwashers where European dishwashers plug in the use garden hose connection to shut off valve. North American use different type of shut off valve where a stainless steel braided line fits. --99.236.xxx.xxx

I would go check the valve myself and see if it is working. If the old dishwasher is already removed, then they must have gotten the valve shut off or your tenant would be without water and the installer would not know that the new unit won't fit if they tried installing it.

If it does need a new valve then I would request using a quarter turn valve. You would need to know the plumbing codes in your state in order to know if it had to be a steel valve. I don't see why that would matter but codes can be funny.

As far as the price for changing the valve, that depends on the type of plumbing and what all will be entailed in changing it out. If you have PEX plumbing then the price is probably too high depending on the price of new valves these days and type of valve. --73.120.xx.xxx

I have found the answer with lots of research ...I need to purchase an ADA compliant dishwasher...these are great with "raised floors". They go as low as 32 (and a small fraction) and as high as 34 inches. --108.56.xxx.xx

Occasionally when someone installs another layer of thick flooring such as tile or wood, we've had to cut the legs off the old DW to remove it. Then we've had to gently raise the countertop to get the new one in.

I say BS on having to replace the existing supply line. I like to use quarter turn valves for all of my shutoffs. --71.184.xxx.xx

Now i am irritated the more i read about ADA compliant dishwashers. Seems they are quite common.

Best Buy has delivered and attempted to install 2 different dishwasher. Neither time did anyone say "you need to get an ADA compliant dishwasher". I would hope that folks who install dishwashers everyday would be aware of ADA compliant dishwashers and how they are the common solution for new dishwashers when a tile floor has been installed.

Why did I have to find the solution on the internet... do the installers who do this for a living not know this solution to a fairly common problem???? --108.56.xxx.xx

You can raise the front of the countertop by driving in floor shims at each side of the dishwasher opening, remove the adjuster legs on all corners to created the ADA size. --76.188.xxx.xxx

The dreaded tile problem...I just had that. I was able to get the old DW out somehow without doing anything special, but then I had to chisel out some of the tile in the front by hand so the new one would fit into the space. --72.188.xxx.xxx

I would have looked at the tenant and asked; "What has changed? I thought you were the dishwasher.

Watch their reaction, smile, and then tell them this is a process as someone before you changed the dishwasher replacement configuration. Keep it light and they will accept the process. --184.57.xxx.xx

gosh you all get ripped off all the time...

There are 4 screw in legs on dishwashers-- take them off-- unscrew them. Once you slide the new dishwasher in wood shims (tapered) in where the legs were.

shut off? put a new hose with built in shut off and don't mess with the one in there. Leave it open.

You do know you could change this out by just turning off the water tot he houses?

This could become a 1500 dishwasher. --99.103.xxx.xxx

I think the bigger question is why don't the folks who install dishwashers for a living know to "There are 4 screw in legs on dishwashers-- take them off-- unscrew them. Once you slide the new dishwasher in wood shims (tapered) in where the legs were.".

Clearly I am not the first person to have a dishwasher with tiles around it! --108.56.xxx.xx

Actually now that MYOB mentioned it that's how I got the old one out of the space. The legs until they were high enough so that it could clear the tile edge and come out. I think I had to tilt it as well. --72.188.xxx.xxx

But don't companies (legit and a certain size) have to hire folks who are legally able to work in the US?

I had a new bathroom installed and hired a licenced company to do the work. I know they brought in HD parking lot folks because one day I went to Home Depot and one of the guys who worked on the bathroom was waving hi to me while waiting to be selected for a job from the Home Depot parking lot.

But i don't HD parking lot folks to be part of the employee population from a company "respectable" enough to be working with Best Buy. --108.56.xxx.xx

If a contractor sent by Best Buy subbed this job to illegals who didn't know how to install the DW, go to the manager at Best Buy and make a complaint.

A few years ago I hired Lowe's contactor to do something and there were multiple screw ups with scheduling. I complained and the manager was able to waive part of the cost due to all the trouble I went through. --72.188.xxx.xxx

IIRC from when I worked in appliances at HD, GE makes dishwashers with the most flexibility in height and depth. So I would look at those first.

Second, after working at HD, I would recommend just having the dishwasher delivered and hiring an outside plumber. The guys installing the dishwasher from BB will just be the delivery guys. Their knowledge cannot do anything outside of very narrow limitations. This narrow scope is for two reasons - delivery guys will only have the most basic knowledge of how to do a DW hookup and the liability of BB. --70.16.xxx.xxx
