Had screens. They still clog depending on what type of tree of vegetation overhangs the roof. You still have to brush or hose them off occasionally and sometimes, if you get lazy, the water just flows over the top of the screen which defeats the whole reason for having a gutter. Maybe in an area where nothing overhangs and nothing blows onto the screen they might be workable. --72.220.xxx.xxx

Better than nothing but depending on how many trees are around, not much. To me, it's mostly advertizing. "You must have this new gimmick". It appeals to older and lazier people.

People need to realize that owning a place includes maintenance. Cleaning, straightening gutters and trim, etc are just part of the ongoing maintenance. Do it as part of regular maint or hire it done. --24.180.xx.xx

No. False sense of security. When they fill up and you don't see it, expecting them to work, you'll have problems... maybe gutter helmet, but I'd spend the 2-4 k for it elsewhere --174.234.xxx.xxx

Had them and they lasted for a couple years. Small stuff still gets in and that means removing some screen to get it out when it gets right over the down spouts. I had pine needles and they went right through. Squirrels and other critters will walk on them and push them down so there are gaps along the edges and more stuff gets in then.

If you have really high gutters like at the top of a two story, it helps to not have a problem every single year. About every two three years I still needed to pay someone to go up there. Screens that look like window screen are too small. Water has a skin to it and it will run over the top and not go in the gutter. If you don't mind overtopping in torrential rains or don't have those, it might be OK but I always passed those by. I don't get gutter helmet because I don't believe that stuff doesn't go right in with the water and I think torrential rain is not going to follow that curve into the gutter. The worst situation here is a hurricane in late October when the leaves are loose and ready to come down. Gutters get swamped with tons of them and come down. That was why I got the screens around here. --108.24.xx.xx

This year there were four Ash trees on the south side of the house where the Ash Beetle destroyed the upper part of the trees where chopped down all four trees so from this point on there will be little leaves to go into the eaves. Bought a special attachment for the pressure washer which has two heads to clean out. If have a scaffold can easily buy screens from local building supply store then easily install yourself as it is not rocket science to install screens. In the house there is metal roof where water tends to flow at a faster rate as there is less friction then asphalt shingles. --99.236.xxx.xxx

Yes, if you have trees nearby.

And if you're attending the conference next week, I will be discussing this in my presentation on Friday as to which kind(s) I recommend. --99.92.xxx.xxx

I'd say yes to gutter guards but my preference is to cut down all the trees that might blow stuff into the gutter.

The laminar flow helmet style doesn't work around oak trees. The oak pollen ruins the laminar flow sticking to the metal and makes the water go over the gutter and onto the ground.

the screen type doesn't work around pine trees as they clog the little holes.

I have had all types of guards but my current preference is the screen type. I can take the leaf blower and blow the crud off the screens 1 or 2 times a year and saves time compared to no screens.

Naturally your mileage might vary. --65.188.xxx.xxx

NO!

Wasted money putting them on my daughter's house a couple years ago.

She has a big tree/shady back yard.

I just told her yesterday I wish we had not put on gutters, as I was showing her the evidence of how the screens ate clogged because water was overflowing the gutters.

I'm not sure what is better now: remove the screens & possibly clog the gutters, or just keep having to clean the screens off. --68.229.xxx.xxx
