So, for those playing along at home, our CPA (that we've used for at least the last 10 years) e-filed our taxes over three months ago. I'd checked the IRS website once or twice, after I realized we didn't get our usual refund within a month or two, but it was listed as "pending," so I waited patiently.

In today's mail, we got the 5071c letter, which is basically, "Um, can you verify your identity?"

We verified our identity. Now we get to wait maybe another 9 weeks before we get the actual check in the mail.

It was just kind of odd, since especially with our Schedule E, there's definitely an amount of continuity from one year to the next. And since it was a complicated document filed through our CPA, it's not really the usual sort of vehicle for identity theft, versus, like, some other shenanigans someone might come up with.

But I thought I'd throw that out there in case there were other people who were in a similar situation this year. --137.118.xx.xxx

Yes; I have heard from several local people that they are still waiting for their federal refunds. No problems receiving state refunds.

Since criminals in jail can make up phone returns and also get a few hundred million is fraudulent Unemployment benefits quickly, the IRS wants to make sure that hard working honest tax payers have to wait to get their refunds. Why? Government isn't run like private business, if they make a mistake they will never go out of business because they own printing presses that will make up money to cover their mistakes. --47.155.xx.xxx

Yes, same here filed back in April and received my state refund timely but not my federal refund. Finally, I was able to get thru to the agency and was told it was still under review for something about the stimulus payment back in January 2021 that was not reported. I told the agent that I believed this to be 2021 reporting but she said it was for 2020 and they are "correcting it". Totally asinine. --172.56.xx.xxx

I had that happen a couple of years ago. Had to go in to the local branch and meet with someone for 5-10 minutes until they were satisfied it was me. Anyone with a refund of a few thousand dollars or a little more is a red flag for fraud, so you're more likely to get double-checked. Was pretty easy in the end, but the waiting and total lack of communication from the IRS was maddening. Think I filed in March and got my refund in September. --100.34.x.xx

We got our Federal Refund (tiny!) within 2 weeks of e-filing in mid-February. Friends of ours who filed in March are still waiting on theirs. Seems like they get flooded after February. I recall past years were also delayed, but not by this much.

Regarding ID verification? Never had to deal with that.

IRS is slow and inefficient? Yep. They're understaffed and have had their budget slashed in recent years. Plus as Robert mentioned there is zero penalty for them when they make mistakes, so there is not a culture of meritocracy. We are all aware of this, and yet....some clever voters want to put the Govt in charge of healthcare. (*grins) --107.216.xxx.xxx

Quite a few years ago one of my daughters got an urgent type letter from the IRS regarding her tax return. Seems someone had attempted to file under her s.s. number and get her refund. They never gave any real details. She had to do something through a fraud dept in I believe SanFrancisco. It's been years and she still receives a PIN number every year that she must use. --72.70.xxx.xxx

There are two separate things going on now.

The first is that some of the people who efiled at end of Feb and beginning of March had their returns set aside for manual processing. Apparently 29 million returns. There is no way to find out the status of these returns and the people must sit and wait.

More recently many people got a letter asking to verify they are the tax payer. Here's the rub. If you go to the web site listed on the letter, the web site says for certain letters you cannot use it. If you try to call (I tried at 7:00AM for one client) you get a message that they are two busy and to call back another day. I called for one client to get an appointment at the local IRS office. I was kicked off the call because they were too busy. It's all very frustrating.

Still waiting here as well. Filed electronically on 3/5

Meanwhile someone opened up three phony accounts in my name with PNC bank. Called them, told them it was fraud (no doubt to receive pandemic UIB) and purchased identity theft protection, then proceeded to put a credit freeze on the big three. --72.231.xxx.xx

The IRS personnel have been socially distancing in the service centers since covid started. So they simply have less staff to process almost everything. Plus the recovery rebates (stimulus payments) have to be reconciled with income and eligibility. If you didn't get your rebate earlier you can claim it on the tax return. Some people are claiming that they didn't get the rebates while others are claiming inaccurate advances. There's probably a fair amount of attempted fraud from people trying to double dip on the stimulus. That too is slowing things down. --209.122.xx.xxx

Tra la la... another letter from the IRS in my mail today. Could tell it wasn't a check. Curious what they were writing about now. It was composed on June 4th, arrived June 14th.

Hey! I may be eligible to receive advance payments of the Child Tax Credit! Did I know that the American Rescue Plan, signed into law in March, made important changes to the CTC for most taxpayers in 2021? If I'm eligible for advance CTC payments and want to receive them, I don't need to do anything! I'll get another letter in the future! With more details!

...except, they should know I'm not eligible for it...

...still waiting on my tax refund, though. That would be nice...

Didn't update, but on Monday, I received another letter in the mail from the IRS. "Hi, we want to pay you an extra $1k+. If you want to argue with us, please call us at this number. If you're okay with it, do nothing, and we'll get to you in about 4-6 weeks."

I went over to my CPA to ask where the extra money came from. I don't mind the IRS giving me extra back, but I also am uncomfortable with the situation because I know "surprise, it's actually a different number!" can work both ways. It was explained to me that there was some sort of rule change in March for this year's taxes, so people who filed prior to whatever it was are having their taxes automatically corrected. Or something. And the reasoning they gave was because DH's 4th quarter income was different than estimated... and I was confused as to why anyone was dealing with estimates, when you had actual solid numbers for 2020.

Anyhow. The advice I got was to sit still and do nothing.

Fast-forward to Friday--- and my refund check was in today's mail. Obviously, the IRS wasn't sitting around to see if I agreed or disagreed. Haven't opened it to see if it was for Amount A or Amount B. But yay, it arrived, so all is well.

Just in time for the banks to be closed on Monday. :P --137.118.xx.xxx
