School needs proof paid?

I have a tenant who needs proof of current rent supposedly for her child’s new school. She says she is trying to switch schools and the new school wants proof her rent is current. That doesn’t sound right . Don’t they usually just request a utility bill or a lease as proof of residency. Child is attending school in another town and they now want to switch to town they live in. They have been there a few years. I’m assuming they need it for a new LL but they are EFT so they could have gotten that without asking me.

Maybe they are getting assistance in paying for this school. I don't find it odd that the school want to understand their personal finances. My section 8 residents need to provide their lease, so i give them a one page simple lease, the rental amount is a bit more than the true monthly rent. Schools will require proof of address, so that children can't be placed outside of their school district. The school district doesn't care whether or not their families pay their rent.

Either your tenant misunderstood what was requested or else she is trying to move to a new rental.

You could call the school district and ask about their policy, if you are curious.

Point out to the tenant that she makes rent payments EFT and can get her payment history by herself.

If she is trying to move and she is all paid up, really, you should not be trying to block her from moving.

Also, it might not have anything to do with the school. She might be trying to get a mortgage or a car loan or some sort of housing assistance.

Or heck, this is a tenant, she might be trying to get a written proof of rent payment to give to her deadbeat cousin who is trying to trick a landlord into taking him.

Schools have tightened up on allowing students to transfer because of the whole shut-down thing. My grandkids school is STILL doing virtual learning till the end of this school year. Very likely this family had kept their kids at their old school when they moved, but now it’s time to transition the kids to this school. Maybe the old school isn’t continuing to meet expectations.

I would just make some copies of the rent receipts, type up a quick letter describing length of tenancy. Maybe put a phone number where the school can call you if they have further questions.

If you are worried tenant is ‘up-to-something’ get the School District office address where the information needs to go, and send it directly. Some landlords charge a fee for office services like this, but, I would presume those landlords have previously given tenant a list of fees, so their tenants would expect a charge. Me? I prefer to not ‘ nickel and dime’ tenants, I keep my rents up, and my tenant comply relatively easily when I make requests of them. --70.92.xxx.xxx

Some schools are more desirable than others. Sometimes parents try to fool the school by claiming an address other than where they actually live, so the school might want either a registered property tax-paying address, or a lease PLUS a rent receipt.

A couple of years ago, I had a guy who wanted just a written lease showing address in my complex, and was willing to pay a thousand dollars, which he raised to $2000, just so he could get his son into the Culver City High School.

As Moshe mentioned, parents will do things to be able to get their children into a more desirable school district. When my grandkids’ school announced they were going to remain virtual for the entire year, my daughter looked into trying to get the kids in our district. There is no fooling them, EVERYONE was trying to get in; the school district was needing serious PROOF. Utility bills can go in almost anyone’s name, those don’t work as proof anymore. ( husband rolled his eyes and firmly said no when I asked would he consider switching houses so the kids could attend our district! Hmmmph! )

This sounds like a legitimate request to me. This tenant’s kids might have been going to a parochial or private school, and now that the family is choosing to switch to their local public school, the public school want proof that they really live there. And, utility bills aren’t cutting it anymore. Another result of the shutdown- those district offering in-person learning are getting mobbed with families wanting to get in.

The school probably uses FAFSA to determine parent contribution and part of that determination is looking at mandatory expenses such as housing. Nothing odd at all. I went thru it when applying for financial aid when my kid was is elementary school. They nit pick everything in your budget - down to how much you spend on pets and vacations. --75.143.xxx.xxx
