Is everyone using these now, when you replace an outlet? Do you get any complaints from Ts, since these can be a pain with appliances like a hairdryer that you frequently plug and unplug?

Only when the city does an electrical inspection. Otherwise I stick with a normal outlet. --173.216.xxx.xx |

Thanks Dave. I installed a couple of the normal ones and then got concerned that maybe the code had changed? I looked online and it seems the NEC "requires" tamper proof outlets now but the NEC is a national organization...couldn't find anything while googling about the Florida residential code on this subject. I'll have to go to their website to find out if it is mentioned. --72.188.xxx.xxx |

Agree, many complaints when using TR outlets. How many more things can they regulate? --47.205.xxx.x |

I have more trouble with them than my kids do. I've pushed too hard and broke plate covers and bent prongs on cords. Not a fan. --174.198.xx.xxx |

If got an inspector forcing us to use them now. It depends on what version of the nec the municipality uses and how strict the inspectors are. I just had to fill an entire panel w arc fault breakers... what a waste of $$$ --174.234.xxx.x |

Anyone tried Pass & Seymour TR outlets? I read that the prongs aren't as difficult to push in on that brand as on Leviton, etc. --72.188.xxx.xxx |

Those arc fault breakers are nonsense and a huge expense. Just another reason we swap panels without permits when we can. --174.198.xx.xxx |

I had a switch that needed to be replaced and the electrician insisted that they had to use an arc fault breaker as the replacement because of code, and I was charged extra. But no permit was pullled for the repair. I guess I was ripped off? --72.188.xxx.xxx |

re arc fault breakers.
they are NOT NONSENSE.
previously they were designated for bedrooms, now more often complete panels. yes they are more expensive for the part and labor involves mounting the second ground wire.
but the perfect example is what they are designed for. an arc fault is different from an open or dead short.
Many years ago, I had a tenants housekeeper set fire to one of my units while iron clothes.
it was an arc fault at the plug / wire point which sparked like lighting and shot flames out for several seconds with the current still on. it was not until the heat had melted and fused the metal into a melted dead short, which popped the breaker.
Had there been an arc fault breaker in miliseconds the circuit would have been shut down and probably no fire or electrocution hazard. --172.250.xx.xxx |

I'm a retired home inspector. yes, the NEC now requires tamper-proof outlets. However, each "area" has their own ability to decide which parts of the national code to follow. And keep in mind this is for new construction and repairs requiring a permit in most areas. If you're changing just one outlet, it's not required where I am to update to tamper-proof.
I would recommend contacting your AHJ (authority having jurisdiction), which could be your city or county code enforcement group, and ask them under what circumstances, if any, you'd be required to install these. If you really want to protect yourself, ask for a response via email and put it in your file in case something happens. --99.92.xxx.xxx |

I think that the tamper resistant outlets can make a nice selling point as a “baby proofed” place and explaining why the price for rent is higher. --174.244.xxx.xxx |
