Wondering if this was possible? have you heard of a residential property using 300,000 gallons of water in a month? Water company said I must have a leak somewhere. They changed the meter and it read normal for two days, then spiked back up again. No issues with water pressure or any signs of water in or outside the house. A 3/4 inch diameter pipe puts out around 7 gallons a minute so that means it be able to pump out around 302,000 gallons in 30 days (7 gallons per minute x 60 minutes x 24 hours x 30 days) meaning I should have no water to anything in the house.

Also, after they changed the meter they never notified me again about high water usage. --70.104.xxx.xx

I had a tenant with a unusually high water/sewer bill, turns out her maid was doing 4-7 loads daily in the washer. --76.188.xxx.xxx

We've had a leak - more than once but at different places - under the driveway between meter and house...so our bill...thousands of dollars.

We've also had the cleaning lady doing excessive laundry, only in our case it was a massage therapist doing all the linens for the spa... --50.82.xxx.xxx

As a licensed plumbing contractor, here were several cases that this happened due to both tenant and landlord fault:

1) 24 hour running toilets. Either the stopper no longer fit or the fill valve kept on delivering water into the tank, then down the overflow.

2) Tenant didn't want the owner to see their pack-rat apartment. Their HOT water side of the tub/shower valve had a cracked seat and no longer a washer on the stem -- tenant tied a T-shirt around the tub spout so the water would drain into the tub and no one could hear it running. This went on for months and the owners water an central gas water heater was sky high.

3) The pool filler line was left open. The pool lever went close to the top of the pool edge tiles, but an over flow hole/pipe kept the excess water draining through the back yard and then into the City Wash.

Other things are more common. You need to check your water meter flow needle to see if during a period that no one is using water, water is flowing into your property. --47.155.xx.xxx

I think your calculations are off. I fill my swimming pool which is about 20,000 gallons in less than 24 hours with a garden hose on full blast. Take that X 30 days would be about 600,000 gallons. Using that as a baseline, a garden hose running half open on would generate that much usage in a month. Subtract from that normal household usage and the difference could be a major trickle. Check the flappers and drippy faucets.

To check for a leak, make sure all the water is turned off in the unit and then go see if the meter is clicking up over 5-10 minutes. --64.130.xx.xx

To test the toilet flapper, put food coloring - other than blue, in the tank and look for leakage in the bowl.

If you do have a water leak that is underground, the sewer bill might be abated --24.154.xx.x

Had one set a faucet to a trickle so the cats could drink from it ... all day and night!

After seeing it once (and getting the "explanation") I told them they pay the water if I see it again.

The cats drank from a bowl after that --76.119.xxx.xxx
