SC is withdrawing from any federal help for pandemic-related unemployment. Why? A severe lack of labor shortage.

NC is facing the same issues big time.

I didn't realize people were still getting extra unemployment money, I thought that ran out in September? --50.82.xxx.xxx

Locally, pretty much ALL employers are begging for workers...while they sit home and collect unemployment. Or, work jobs under the table while collecting. It's a sad way for our nation to go into deep debt and devalue our dollar. --69.80.xx.xxx

Don't worry: our dear leaders will soon fix all of these problems with UBI. That will certainly motivate people to get out there and work hard to earn a living. --107.216.xxx.xxx

SID, at first blush I might agree with you, but here's one big difference between UBI and unemployment or welfare: UBI *adds* to your earned income, while unemployment or welfare punish you financially for working.

People working under the table while collecting: it's illegal and they are evading taxes, but hey they are working at least. --50.82.xxx.xxx

The STATE paper out of Columbia SC had the following.

The Gov is ordering the state’s Department of Employment and Workforce to withdraw from the federal government’s federal pandemic unemployment programs.

Starting on June 30, the state will no longer participate in the expanded unemployment benefits put in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“South Carolina’s businesses have borne the brunt of the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Those businesses that have survived — both large and small, and including those in the hospitality, tourism, manufacturing, and healthcare sectors — now face an unprecedented labor shortage,

GOOD!

EVERY business has a "Help wanted" sign out, and they are offering bonuses just for being hired - to work in a convenience store. Still can't get help.

I was obviously raised differently than many. Members of my family would be ashamed to not work for their wages.

Our country need more shame - really. "Nobody" is embarrassed by their bad behaviors anymore. They aren't even labeled "bad". --68.229.xxx.xxx

I'm over here in Georgia (just across the river from SC) and we're in the same pickle regarding labor shortage. To date our local Lowes, Tractor Supply, Home Depot, Kroger stores, just all the fast food stores, Family Dollar, most of the gas stations, etc. have signs up looking for help.

Georgia is about to follow SC which started requiring those on unemployment to provide weekly documentation that they have made the attempt to look for at least two job opportunities prior to receiving further compensation. Whether this is monitored is unknown.

A recent (true) story is from a tenant who said her daughter ordered a pizza from a local chain one friday night at about 8 pm. It was finally delivered around midnight. The next day she contacted the manager to find out why the long delay. Said the guy actually burst into tears on the phone explaining he had started the night with five workers. Four of them received their stimulus checks and walked out on him leaving him with one worker for a busy friday night.

I can't get a plumber from a company I use to come to address a non-emergency issue at one of the houses we're remodeling because they've lost 9 of their workers who suddenly quit after receiving their stimulus checks.

The same morning I got the call about this I was driving to the house that was also getting a new roof. I got there at 8:30 a family of hispanic workers was already up on roof, had the tarps up and half the old shingles off. And speaking with the project manager later in the day they had been using this family for over a year and half and yes they were legal folks who worked like dogs getting that roof replaced and cleaning up after themselves. --73.20.xxx.xxx

The labor shortage is ridiculous here too. Every time we have tried to go out for dinner , there is an hour wait even though the restaurant is only 1/4 full. They have plenty of open tables but no staff. Today our fearless leader said that unemployment wan’t the problem. He says that once everyone gets vaccinated they will magically want to go back to work. There are plenty of vaccines here. They are about as popular as jobs right now. --68.191.xx.xx

We have a friend that runs a short-order diner. They have been trying to hire a cook for months now. They finally got an inexperienced guy and are paiying $18/hr, pre pandemic they were paying $10 for unskilled cooks. We are going to be paying for this twice. Once in unemployment, the second time as a consumer.

I drove down a business street the other day, 19 help wanted banners (not just signs in the window) in a 3 block drive. I can't imagine what it is going to be like by the end of the summer. --64.130.xx.xx

I hear down the road...this will only get worse. Personally I think we give them 1 months notice and then cut the pandemic unemployment off. Jobs may not be what they want, may not be glamorous, but they are there. Many have had a years paid vacation. As someone who has worked harder thru this mess I am over it. And since the Gov. Seems to want to be so generous with my money. If they insist on giving it out, how about giving the low income workers who have been working thru this caos a bonus. I know the convenient store clerk who always had my over priced coffee fresh deserves something for working as opposed to taking the easy route. --174.251.xxx.xxx

There’s chaos around every corner of this. I am an employer. Nobody got laid off but unemployment went up 10% anyway ( to pay for everybody else who had layoffs). One employee quit because he was mad that we wouldn’t lay him off so he could get that sweet pandemic bonus from the government. Now the cost of labor has gone up as well as supplies. On top of that, there is the new paid family leave law. So even if you find good employees, they can get 6 months off paid to take care of a variety of things involving them or their family. A lot of businesses have their part timers working full time, that means benefits they can’t afford. But, they deserve them if they are full time. --68.191.xx.xx

Missouri started cutting people off from unemployment if they didn’t apply or if they turned down jobs.

Walmart can’t find enough workers. They are starting many at $15 per hour or more. The gas station is pay $13.50/hour.

Our local McDonalds is so short handed, they started closing for a few hours mid-afternoon.

We drove from MO to Mobile, Alabama last week. Many of the places we tried to stop for dinner had help wanted signs out. In many cases, they had the drive through only open because they didn’t have staffing for the dining room. The fast food places are paying more, but nothing compares to being paid for not working. --67.43.xxx.xxx

Locally, "For Hire" signs every where. All local elected officials are telling biz that they need to up the pay so people don't want the unemployment $$. So that makes everything more expensive and the low earners right back in the same spot... barely getting by.

I ran a help ad for a handyman. Full time position. All the applicants haven't held a job for more than 6 months or have tried running a handyman biz and is failing (eye roll). Basically, the ones that are not working... are the trouble ones (can't show up on time, give 100% effort 25% of the time, needs their hand held to complete the job, etc) --76.77.xxx.xxx

You can certainly add mandatory vax and forced face muzzles into some of this unemployment. A lot of moms now home schooling and a lot of people starting small businesses so they don't have to work at places like freaks. A lot of people won't work at places with mandatory vax. To say an election has CONSEQUENCES is truly an understatement.

The vote buying schemes or just dumb gov't go on and on. And what are the Repubs in Congress doing to stop this run away train? Talk and no action.

Governors seem to be the only ones taking any kind of action.

Maybe Term Limits could fix some of this CRAZINESS.
