So I'm pretty sure this wouldn't be taken as a landlord thread without the OT, but to make people happy it's there.

I am scheduled to get my hip replaced late June, just after the Convention, in fact. They could have done it before but then I would miss the Convention ;)

Has anyone had this done? Can you tell me anything to help make me less terrified? --50.82.xxx.xxx

W,

My Dad had both done the same day, years ago. Wished he would have done it sooner. The effects of surgery were less than the daily pain before surgery.

Sister had it done recently.

Be sure to mark which leg!

I know Brad!

I tripped on a friend's very bad step in late 2019. Won't go into details but we are no longer friends, I can't stand it, they changed my life but I wouldn't sue them or anything. I just won't talk to them ever again. And they don't even know why, sad to say. I just can't discuss it.

Smashed my hip. Accelerated my decline. In January 2020 it came crashing in but Covid.

So now it's a year and half later and I'm going for it. --50.82.xxx.xxx

My good friend had this surgery. She said the first 3 weeks there was pain. She is now walking with a cane, outside around the neighborhood. My appliance repair man had one done, then the other. He didn't say much about pain just that once healed he was all good. Wished he done it sooner. He also said cataract surgery and hip replacement are the two surgeries the medical world has down pat. Easy pease. If you have to have a surgery have one of these two. --172.58.xx.xxx

In the past the American Medical Association (what ever they were called) with others did not allow a new procedure to take place in the US for hip replacement. The old method, chop off the end of the bone and hammer in a rod with hardware attached to it. While in other countries the grind down the bone ends and install a cap over it. This is done with micro surgery. No cutting to tendons.

The recovery time for the new method, a couple of days. The recovery time for the conventional $40,000 American job, 6 to 9 months.

So a good friend, 80 years old, needed a hip replacement. We went to his Beverly Hills doctor and had a conversation. Have his hip replaced through the stand US method, and never enjoy walking again. But go to the Philippines and have a $5,000 surgery, and the first day you will be walking a couple hundred feet every hour. And by the second day you can walk a block or two. In a week you will be in better shape than before the operation.

So my friend said, can you do the operation. The doctor said it is not legal in the United States. But if we call it something else and you write me a check for $40,000 -- I will do it. So on Monday he had the operation and by Thursday he want to my fathers house to play cards and walked up the steps better than he had over the last 10 years. This story is over 20 years old....

So when my dad needed a hip replacement, he went with what ever the insurance paid for. Then after ward he cried because of being cheep he was in pain for the rest of his life. --47.155.xx.xxx

I had both knees done, two years apart. The key to everything is the "skill of the operator." (The orthopedic surgeon is good.)

I can walk for miles, without thinking about it. I have trouble kneeling, though.

Don't do two joints at once. It's not safe.

I agree with others from reports I hear about how much better hip replacement is now that it used to be. It sounds as though you will have good results.

One of my problems from an accident six years ago is my left shoulder. The orthopedic doctor I see several years ago said if I were interested in shoulder replacement he would refer me to another doctor to discuss it, that he himself would not recommend it for me. --136.34.xxx.xxx

Definitely getting the anterior ("new") way where they go in the front, not cut in from the back. The "old way" may help your pain but can be physically limiting for the rest of your life, I'm told by my physical therapist. The new way, as everyone says, you are up and about right away and once the wound heals, all good physically.

Surgeon said they sometimes hesitate if someone is too YOUNG because the hip CAN wear out, but at 64 he's pretty sure it will outlive me! --50.82.xxx.xxx

The only thing not mentioned so far is that you probably will be told not to fly for 6 months after the surgery. So, if that is going to happen you will need to plan for it. That was something that nobody told me until after the surgery was done, and that caused me come issues with my investments.

Apparently, that is a blood clot thing. But check with your own surgeon. --76.178.xxx.xxx

So. We are just about a week out from surgery. Had it done 11am or so last Thursday, went home at 5pm that night. Felt pretty good then! Guess I still had pain killers in me :)

That night, next day and for several subsequent days, I was questioning my decision big time - initial surgical pain was worse than having a bad hip (THAT pain was completely gone, btw.) Instead of trying to be stoic, I took the full dose of pain meds every chance I got.

But again, it's only a week out and I can see steady improvement every day. No pain meds last night at all. Tylenol today. So I'm guessing I will soon be saying, "Well worth it!"

Thanks for the well-wishes! --50.82.xxx.xxx
