Out local news here ran a story from some financial genius trying to help tenants who can’t pay rent. To be fair, they did inform them they would owe the rent once the moratorium was over. However, they seemed to know how to get out of that too. First of all, they were very informative of all the programs available and were sure to clarify that they could look for one that would send the money directly to the tenant. Even better, they let them know that some “ require really burdensome documentation that can be very hard for some of the lowest-income and most marginalized people to produce.” ( so, it’s harder for low income people to come up with documentation?)They let them know to look for the programs that let them self certify.

Next , they made LLs out to be fools who didn’t even want to take the tenant’s free rent money from these programs.. In their own words

“A lot of landlords will say, ‘Forget about it. I don’t want to deal with that,’” says Deborah Thrope, deputy director of the National Housing Law Project, a nonprofit advocate for housing rights for the poor.

Most disturbing , they advised theses non paying tenants to get ahead of any eviction notices by filing bankruptcy ( before they receive it) so they don’t have to pay any of that back rent with the self -certified free money. So does this genius really think that a BK is better than an eviction. Sorry, but I think for the next few decades we will all know what a BK in 2021 means in rental applicants.

It's a lot of work to avoid working.

The government doesn't seem to be able to write any programs that are not chock full of holes for scammers to take advantage. --76.178.xxx.xxx

Socialist do not believe anyone should make a profit from rentals as not for profit is the socialist ideal. What the socialist are proposing here where after a period of time a lot of rental housing will be taken off the market forever. Over last twenty years the secondary rental housing in the province of Ontario gets smaller every year where houses, townhouses and condominiums are sold off to become owner occupied. Now the vacancy rate is non existent or one per cent on and off. The average price of house in Canada is around $750,000 Cdn. dollars where depending what part of the country you live will be able buy where in larger urban areas you are lucky to buy a one bedroom condominium. Now as owners are completely fed up with rent arrears along with the cost houses there continues to be a sell off. When more immigrants arrive the shortage of rental housing is only to get worse. If the province of Ontario emptied the entire provincial treasury there would be enough to buy out all the private sector rentals. What people are forgetting here is how large rental housing in the economy where they call those people progressive when in fact they have extreme views about reality. --99.236.xxx.xxx

The previous President declared bankruptcy 6 times. Sounds like you are saying it is OK for a rich person to do so and bone the smaller guy but when the smaller guy is in over their head they can't do it? Stay classy conservatives. --72.49.xxx.xxx

In my opinion BK should not exist for anyone to use. Everyone should be held responsible.

Ken, you are right on both counts but here is the thing, I have witnessed this first hand my whole life and if they actually got a job then they wouldn't really make anymore money then the government gives them and then they couldn't get free food and labor from churches, organizations and others. It is a way of life for them and a mindset that everyone owes them something. Why work for food when you can have it handed to you. --73.120.xx.xxx

JAC, we all know the uses of BK as a financial tool. I agree it usually means that someone gets screwed, so I do not rent to people who do that. So technically I could not and would not rent to the former president. The point is that tenants are being informed to declare because it is somehow better for them than an eviction. --68.191.xx.xx

I had a tenant 2 years ago that could not pay. They sought help from a local agency, and I agreed to accept payment from them. But the process and paperwork were onerous....I had to make 3 trips down to their building and still it took 3 weeks to get the money. Yes, it's better than not getting paid...but it sure isn't the easiest process. --99.92.xxx.xxx
