I make it a point to wash and re-use rags after I use them initially. I have a small drum in my garage and I go empty it out periodically into the washing machine.

I suppose I should pay closer attention next time I do this task to sort out the white rags from the the couple of red ones in the batch.

I use lock boxes to let my contractors into my empties so I can multi-task. I feel very comfortable knowing that over the next two weeks or so on this rehab job, that no contractors will want to steal my PINK painters rags.

Okay - the life of a bachelor LL

Haha Ray,

Classic!

At Purdue’s parent meeting they reminded us to teach our future college students how to do laundry.

They chuckled while telling us

Week one: clean clothes and fresh haircuts

Week three: “Pink Week”

I'm trying to remember what it was I was doing--- but I had a pile of red shop rags that I left in a wet pile on top of a surface after I'd used them to mop up water.

That was when I discovered that the dye in the rags wasn't fixed. I had a giant pink stain underneath where they had lain for a few days... I'm not sure if I ever got it out.

But I definitely remembered to avoid red shop rags in the future. --137.118.xx.xxx

The first time I went to a laundromat with one of my college roommates, he followed the posted directions & dumped a whole box of laundry detergent into a regular size top loading washer. When we came back to throw our stuff in a dryer, we found the poor attendant swearing up a storm up to her knees in soap suds. It never dawned on him that the sign was referring to the small boxes available in their vending machine & not the large economy size he brought with him. --71.184.xxx.xx

LOL Yours was just an oversight. Definitely a bonus for identifying them.

Brad's & Steve's stories remind me how I told my kids they could make money in college by doing laundry for the clueless dorm-mates. And do their studying while the machines run.

I don't think they ever did that, but my kids all told me they were taking over their own laundry when they were teens. I made sure they ALL (male & female) were trained in ALL household chores. --68.229.xxx.xxx

I started doing my own laundry at age 11. Mom was messing up my clothes and I didn't have many. Two sides to every story. --108.24.xx.xx

We were at our son's house helping with the two toddlers so that our DIL could go help with her mom post-surgery in another state. The water heater near the laundry had a slow leak (it's since been replaced under warranty).

Our son was replacing the damp red shop rags around the base of the water heater with dry ones when they slowly became soaked. But he was throwing the wet ones on top of the other dirty laundry - ruined a couple of very sweet little toddler shirts before I caught what was happening. --71.246.xxx.xx

Next time you do it wrap some string tightly around the white ones and you will be fine. Tie dye is back in style. --64.130.xx.xx

The shop rag adventure reminded me of a very uncomfortable situation caused by my mom. I had brought my clothes home from college and she threw everything in the washer for me. For several weeks later, I had a terrible RASH in a very private spot. After some questioning it turns out she had also thrown thrown her living room curtains in with my undies. The curtains were fiberglass! Thanks Mom. I Never let her touch my wash again. --72.199.xx.xxx

My older sis did it to me when I was a preteen...all my tighty whities came out hot pink.

This was back when we had to wear gym uniforms and dress in front of each other at school. --69.80.xx.xxx

When I first bought my house and moved in I had very little of anything, including clothes. My mother never really taught me anything including cooking and laundry. A few friends of mine took me out shopping to show me where I could get some nice looking clothes and what to buy. I was so happy(not spending the money) to have some really nice(nice to me) new clothes and couldn't wait to wash them and wear them. I threw them all in the washing machine at one time(it saves money, right?) and when I took them out all of my brand new clothes were pink. My friends laughed. After that, they did give me some pointers. Let's not get into cooking. --73.120.xx.xxx

Too funny. We wash our shop rags too, unless they are really nasty or oily then we toss 'em.

BTW - remember not to store oily rags in a pile as spontaneous combustion can occur. We use those galvanized buckets with tight lids as rag storage. They were about $10. I have one at home and one at the shop.
