In the 1031 thread, I asked JAC if she could name a government agency that is run efficiently and cost-effectively.
Since then I've been wracking my brain to think of one. I can't. I know the government is really good at getting money in people's hands, like with SS checks and even the pandemic bonuses were pretty quick considering how sloppily the program was put together. So that's something I guess.
But a truly efficient, cost-effective agency? Can you name one?

There are various government audit agencies that return (save) more money than they spend. I’m certainly not defending government, in generally it’s pretty poorly run. As George Carlin says, one of the biggest lies you’ll ever hear is “I’m from the government and I’m here to help you”. --73.186.xxx.xxx |

The NASA Space race was cost effective until someone decided to use a common o-ring to seal the liquid oxygen fuel system and the inherent and common vibrations allowed a leak to perpetually dribble down to the nozzle. The vibrations were common as some heat shields had fallen off in flight and become torn loose during re-entry - similar to your front fenders becoming loose and flapping only at highway speeds so you ignore the freeway and use surface roadways. --76.188.xxx.xxx |

The Subway system in Los Angeles purchased metal wheels for the cars on tracks that were supposed to get 50,000 miles per wheel. The wheels beardly 5,000 per wheel. Why? Because the L.A. Metro System has so many turns, bends and adjustments. While the systems in Europe that use the same wheels go on a straight line. At $5000 per wheel, this was only a Hundred Million Dollar Mistake Per YEAR! --47.155.xx.xxx |

Name an efficient Govt agency.
Answer: Impossible.
The problem is most Govt agencies have no reason to be efficient. Budgets get trimmed if you don't spend what you are "allotted".
One year a family member who works full time for the military as a civilian employee saw a command spend all their spare money on 100 state of the art treadmills that got moth balled into storage so their budget for the next year would not get cut. Over the next several months, those treadmills started disappearing out of the supply room. No one said a word about this clear misuse of funds and suspicious disappearing high dollar equipment. The command got high marks and promoted.
Trump ballooned the national debt by $7 Trillion in 4 years. Biden is saying he wants to deficit spend another $10 Trillion. How can you even discuss a concept like efficiency when deficits have no meaning and money grows on trees? --107.216.xxx.xxx |

Sid, you are spot on! That is exactly what I witnessed except they bought a bunch of audio visual equipment, cameras and computers. All just to make sure all the budgeted funds got spent by the end of the fiscal year. No use for it and no accountability. It is frustrating how clueless the masses are.

Our BMV is actually pretty efficient. I've never had to wait in line more than 10 minutes, and they get you through the paperwork pretty fast. Local government tends to be more efficient than federal. --104.230.xxx.xx |

I am in love with the local USDA. Now I understand they start WAY up there somewhere and regulate all kinds of things but when it comes to the local office to help local farmers through the Farm Service Agency, they are the best.
That said, every year they have a public meeting talking about how much money they got, how they spent it and how we would like to see it spent in the coming year. I remember the first year I went to one of these they were high-fiving all around the room because they had received a record high budget for that year and were specifically talking about other regions they beat out for the grants. --72.70.xxx.xx |

Like Robert J.s remarks, the Clinton Administration ordered NJ with our then Republican Governor, Christine Todd Whitman, to test cars for emissions at the same level that California was testing them or they would withold our highway money. This was an attack on a Repub governor.
So she decided to look for a bidder to do the testing. I would have said "keep your money". The only bidder was a Parsons company from California who sold the state the same equipment used in CA. Local gas stations can do inspections here so they bought smaller versions at $35K per. Well NJ has ice and snow and when winter came and people drove into those testing centers, all the stuff on the bottom and wheels fell into the machines. Cars drove onto the machines and actually went into a actual speed with the tires rotating and only then was the exhaust tested at the tailpipe. I don't know what it was but so much ice and water and snow fell into the California Parsons machines that they failed completely. And who got blamed and not re-elected, why Christine Todd Whiteman of course. --108.24.xx.xx |

Here every government has a budget where at the of the year if the budget is not used up they buy new furniture. When a conservative is elected they limit annual increases on budgets. Here universal medical care takes around 50 per cent of the annual revenue of the provincial treasury where the federal contributes the other 50 per cent for universal medical. What the socialist ideal is to system like France where there is generous government benefits where France has a very high tax rate to the GNP where a lot of people here do not want become more socialist. Here non profit housing loses $100,000 per year in operating costs along does not the harmonized 13 per cent sales tax on goods and services where the loses are even greater when the lost tax is taken into account. While a great place to work Toronto Community Housing Corporation has many rental units in disrepair. Building inspectors will not inspect as they will prosecute another government agency. If one wants to look at TCHC housing then view some videos on You Tube. --99.236.xxx.xxx |

Its hard for most to wrap their minds around a trillion dollars.
I saw an analogy that said if you had a trillion dollar bills laid end to end,it would go out 2 million miles,....PAST THE DISTANCE TO THE SUN, (about 95 million miles)
That we don't have enough paper to print that many trillion 1 dollar bills.
