My oldest son, lives in Mexico, the Yucatan. He contracted Covid from one of his workers who attended a large unmasked gathering where many got sick, but he didn't reveal that to Michael or his fellow workers. Four of Mike's team, including Michael, got very sick.

Michael has been very careful during this whole thing as the Mexican government hasn't exactly handled things well - he never goes out without a mask, hand-washing etc. but he does have a business to run and a team to manage. He was infected at home - the guy was in and out of his house as Michael was home with his elderly MIL visiting - no masks at home. She was vaccinated, he is not yet as he is not eligible according to Mexican rules.

He was quarantined for two weeks with 103 fever, severe coughing (now had torn muscles) and still sounds horrible on the phone, although he says he has finally tested negative.

He has had some sickness and flus in his life, but he said this is the sickest he has ever been...and he is not yet well after two weeks. I could tell from the first words out of his mouth "Hi Mom."

Covid is still rampant in Mexico. Be careful if you choose to vacation there anytime soon. --50.82.xxx.xxx

Glad he's on the mend. Only one of my children had it. 37 years old, healthy as a horse and had zero symptoms. Someone at one of his job sites had it, everyone was required to get tested, they shut the entire job down for two weeks. --72.70.xxx.xx

Thank you. I must admit I was pretty crushed by the news. He didn't tell me until now because he knows I am Captain Anxiety but I could tell as soon as I heard his voice something wasn't right. The old saying "heart dropped to feet" turns out to be a real thing. --50.82.xxx.xxx

He'll be fine. It's got a 99.97% survival rate. The anxiety I would get checked out though. That can cause a lot of stress on the body. Is this the same kid with anxiety?

I had to go to the hospital a few times when I was young for panic attacks. After counseling, I found that it was all in my head and learned to identify the root cause early and deal with it before it overwhelmed me. That helped me get past it. --70.44.xxx.xx

Wow! Glad your son is doing well. This thing is no joke.

I used to enjoy visiting the Yucatan. Belize Air had a $40 r/t deal for a couple of years and I'd fly down as often as I could. There was a Mexican youth hostel right on the beach on hotel row. They had a pool and snack bar. Cost $2 a night to camp on the beach next to $300 a night condos. I made a number of Mexican friends there and went on so many "adventures" that tourists never see. Ah, that was the life!

I hope the doctor put him on Ivermectin. Our doctor friend told us that since he's been prescribing Ivermectin, none of his cases have progressed, and none have been hospitalized. Not that other treatments can't be effective, but apparently Ivermectin is now known by many as the best treatment.

Search "Dr. Paul Marik Discusses Ivermectin and Vitamin D" on youtube (Dr. Marik is Chief of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School). This video is one for taking notes, so we'll watch it again on our Roku... it's full of power points comparing recent study results regarding the effectiveness of various Covid treatments at different stages of illness, and gives very specific antioxidant doses, etc., to take for prophylaxis and at different stages of Covid exposure or illness. It also includes a power point scatter chart depicting the very high risk of death from advanced Covid when a patient's vitamin D levels are below 30, and the very high probability of recovery when a patient's vitamin D levels are somewhere between about 45 to 60-ish. --71.246.xxx.xx

I recently returned from Mexico. They are not as panicked about it as most Americans. Yes, they are taking precautions, but you can walk down the street ( and into a lot of places) without a mask. The country didn’t shut down because they don’t have inflated unemployment payments. Their government isn’t using it as a political tool , so there is much less anxiety about it there. However, anybody would be anxious about their kid being sick. Especially in Mexico. Their hospitals aren’t what we are used to here. It is a flu. Soon it will be treated just the same as a seasonal flu. I would have anxiety if my kid was in Mexico with a seasonal flu. I still intend to go there and go there often. --68.191.xx.xx

Thanks for the concern! He is recovering but still coughing hard and no energy at all, so this is hard for him. But at least he's back in his own home.

He moved to one of their AirBnBs for the duration and his wife and stepdaughter did daily food deliveries for him, but basically he just laid inside and coughed for two weeks straight with a high fever.

He's recovering. --50.82.xxx.xxx

I'm really sorry to hear about your son. What is worrisome now, is the variants are more contagious, and hit younger people hard.

What I would recommend is that after he recovers he sees a cardiologist to make sure his heart is in good shape. I don't mean to be an alarmist. Hear me out, please. People can have mild cardiac issues that need time to heal. Michael may need to be less active, and take more time, in his recovery if he developed cardiac issues. It's better to know!

One of our friend's sons had a bad case of COVID in LA. He has to walk for exercise, not run or ride his bike. One of the Red Sox pitchers was in the same boat.

My son went to med school in his 30's and is an emergency medicine/palliative care doctor. He did his fellowship at Henry Ford in Detroit as the epidemic raged there. He has treated dozens and dozens of folks with COVID.

We've moved out to Michigan to be near his family. We went to help during the epidemic and now enjoy being near the grandkids. Sold all of our places.

I can hear it now, "Some lady on the Internet said to..." I'll check in to see how he is. --76.19.xxx.xxx

Great information, Jane. And Henry Ford has been considered one of the very BEST places for Covid treatment from what I've heard.

So this is off-topic - but you moved to Michigan? Our son is a fisheries biologist PhD and moved his young family to northern Ohio in 2018 for a Department of Interior position on the Great Lakes. We've considered moving there at some point, but having grown up in Chicago suburbs, we dread the idea of those long cold winters (but our childhood northern summers were perfect, unlike the nasty humid jungle-like summers of Central Virginia - but having a pool pretty much fixes that).

It's a tough call with our properties here and about 3+ years more for a day job. But the 2 & 4 year-old grands are a big draw. --71.246.xxx.xx

Thanks for the tip, Jane. I too have a YOUNG friend (early 40's) who caught Covid, recovered, but now has heart issues. Another who has lung issues.

Michael is an exercise person with a gym in his home and a personal trainer, etc. so I will ask him to get checked out!! --50.82.xxx.xxx

Chris (VA) We did move half way across the country. We spent our adult lives in the Boston area. We've done rentals there, and we bought houses when we went to Florida for the winters as we got older. Years ago we bought a house way out on Cape Cod and in recent years rented it out in the summer. We are there packing it up.

Our son and daughter in law fell in love with Michigan. When he looked for a job they wanted to be in Grand Rapids.

We got older, 71 and almost 79. (It happens!) And although we are hard workers, we can't physically do what we once did. We have a great time being near the grandkids, 8, 5, and 1.

Now that we are vaccinated, we'll get to know the small city, better.
