Hello All,

Would love opinions on a subjective question.

One floor (walk out basement) of my home is going to be a full time Airbnb / guest area. It was one large space, which I am in the process of splitting into an open concept living room/kitchenette/bed space (400sqft) with a very nice full bathroom (85sqtf).

My original plan had me putting in a marble looking porcelain tile on the bathroom floor, shower walls, and 40" up the bathroom walls. The basement already had an 18x18 spanish tile that I was going to leave on the floor in the rest of the area. Turns out, there is an issue with the tile that was pre-existing, so I am now going to remove it. Since I am spending lots of money on this overall project, I might as well do it right.

Anyway, my only requirement is that it is tile and that it is not wood grain/wood look tile.

I've narrowed it to three options and I would love to hear what you would pick.

Option 1: Keep original bathroom design and make the other area a different tile (something neutral, probably white or gray).

Option 2: Keep the original bathroom wall (marble looking tile) and shower (marble looking tile), but change the bathroom floor to be the same as the other area (something neutral, probably white or gray).

Option 3: Keep the original bathroom shower (marble looking tile), but change the bathroom floor and bathroom walls to match the other area (something neutral, probably white or gray).

What would you do? --67.197.xxx.xx

Either option that has the main floor and the bathroom floor the same. Just don't pick anything that will be slippery when wet. --23.30.xx.xxx

I would go with 2. No need to replace the wall tile if it looks good. I would also shy away from white floor tile. It shows every speck of dust. Gray base with accents of other colors in a swirl pattern is my go to, it doesn't highlight imperfection or dust on the floor like solid white. The variety of accent colors allows a wide option for accents and will give you something to work with if gray goes out of style rather than just having to replace. --64.130.xx.xx

Thank you both. I am 99% sure that I am going to do the bathroom floor and the main floor the same tile. I am debating if the bathroom wall tile should match the shower wall tile or the bathroom floor tile. Any additional insights welcomed.

@Kim: For sure. I have a matte tile picked out that is rated to be safe when wet.

@MikeA: To clarify, the room is gutted to the studs at the moment. I have tile on order ready to be picked up, but everything is still completely flexible. The tile I had planned to do the bathroom floor, bathroom walls, and shower walls with is lowes item number 1030356 (if you would like to see what I am talking about).

You want the wall tile to be different from the floor tile. Otherwise it will have an institutional feel. I'd suggest going on Pinterest. Lots of ideas and pictures there. --104.230.xxx.xx

Regrouting is my least favorite thing to do. I would find the largest tile with the least grout line work. Actually for a continuous repeating rental like that I might gut completely and put down sheet vinyl flooring, carpeting I can just vacuum or have steam cleaned and use the acrylic paneling in the bathroom and shower area like the Re bath people do. It's nice and modern looking and you can squirt it clean with a spray bottle. I just don't line to clean up other people's dirt. --108.24.xx.xx

James,

My designer says using the same flooring from room to room makes the home feel larger and more comfortable.

What Brad said. One floor if possible for everything.

Another place to look for ideas is Houzz. They have millions of photos. You can narrow it down to bathrooms and smaller size and budget. (I find the Pinterest format very difficult to navigate.) --70.20.xx.xx
