how are property tax increases treated annually? up to any amount the assessor wants? or limited by law to cost of living adjustment for taxable amount?
obviously they can raise assessed amount to whatever, which the taxable amount often rolls over to upon transfer of ownership, but after held a year, some states only allow COLA to property tax, while other states can double taxable amount in just 1 year.
In Michigan, they are limited to COLA adjustment only. about 2% per year.

Here they reappraise every few years. Once the new appraisal is in the assessors system, they can only increase the assessed value for tax purposes by 5% per year until it reaches the assessed value to match the current appraisal. If they appraise the property too high you can protest and if you have your ducks in a row they are usually very reasonable to deal with. The last time I went I had my stack of papers and the county appraiser came and sat down by me and we went through everything page by page and reached an agreement. --70.178.x.xx |
