I mark it that the person is no longer at that address and drop it back in the mail. --98.174.xxx.xxx

Unless you made an agreement with the vacating Tenant that you would hold all mail for them, for a specified time so they could pick it up from you, since it's not your mail, you must make an effort to return it to the Post Office and mark it like razorback said. You are not allowed to open it or destroy it. Also advise new Tenants to either do the same, or give the mail to you so you can return it. I print up a ton of little address stickers (moved no forwarding address) and give the new Tenants some to make it easier for them and encourage them to not open someone else's mail or throw it away. Especially with Stimulus checks arriving, this is a bad time to not put in a 'change of address' when you leave. --72.197.xx.xx

In the future, modify your lease so that tenant gives consent for you to forward their mail to one of the personal references they listed on their application. Be sure to demand COMPLETE addresses for these people. --107.141.xx.xxx

I write on the front: Moved, return to sender, no forwarding address and leave it out for the mailman to pick up and give it to the post office to send it back to sender. Or I write the forwarding address on it if I have the tenant's new address. I put it in a plastic bag, clear, and tape it to the mailbox so the mail carrier can see it. --108.24.xx.xx

Also, remove the old tenant’s name from the mailbox. Some tenants will keep showing up there to get their mail ( because they are using the address still). You can also tape it shut . --68.191.xx.xx

I often write -Please Forward- on them for 30-45 days, the junk mail never stops. But it makes great flower bed stuffing for new plants and fire starter in the colder months. --76.188.xxx.xxx

Solid advise so far

AND now some humor -

If it is bill for you, you can do as I do - write the word deceased on the envelop --24.154.xx.x

Man, I love you guys on this forum, but my advice would be a little different. Throw it away. When more comes, throw it away, too. One landlord in 100,000 prints up stickers for new tenants to affix to ex tenants mail.

The rest of us just don’t dare to post here what the obvious and practical solution is for ex tenants who move but don’t have the decency to leave a forwarding address. --98.13.xx.xxx

There’s words in a song about this , sung by Elvis. “Return to Sender, Address Unknown.” And then, the postal carriers will STOP delivering mail addressed to that person to that address. Most of the time, anyway.

I’ve even been thanked by a letter carrier for doing that. Saves them time on the route.

I would write on the mail "return to sender, no longer at this addess" and drop it at post office, then they would deliver it again! Crazy. So now i take a fat black marker and scratch off any bar codes, and blacken out the Send to Address name and address, so all they have is the senders address visable on the envelope. However whomever sent the mail will get it back and know from the contents or read under the blacken window envelope who its from. But for the postoffice to deliver it again was insane! --208.54.xx.xxx

For the SD mail it to their last know address, the rental. Not your problem if they didn’t file a change of address. Keep your SD letter if it is returned.

All mail just mark, moved please forward. Not your problem. --99.23.xxx.x

I use a big black sharpie and just write "MOVED" on everything. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

I have two properties that get mail for people I've never hear of. And have gotten that mail for literally years. --69.80.xx.xxx
