Not sure how this will apply to property insurance at some point but it's regarding my car insurance.

I recently did some shopping and got a new auto policy. Shortly thereafter I received a request from them to download some app that will somehow monitor my driving. Not really sure since I didn't read it thoroughly because I knew I wasn't going to do it.

Lo and behold I am being charged $30 additional since I don't use the app and the original premium included that discount.

My new policy is still a better deal than I had so the $30 isn't the issue with me.

Does anyone other than me not see something wrong with someone monitoring their daily driving habits? According to the agent, "everyone" does this and I am the first he's had who refused.

What if I sit at Tony's Tavern for three hours, drink ice water, hit a tree on the way home and don't call the insurance until the next day? Is the insurance company going to attempt to deny my claim saying I was drinking and driving? Will they up my premium when my car tells them that I am swerving over onto the berm too often? That the car has to tell me when to brake? By the way, I had my son-in-law turn off most of that stuff when I got my car as all that beeping and buzzing isn't necessary - I know how to drive without the car assisting me. --72.70.xxx.xx

Our insurance company give us a discount on any of our vehicles that are driven less than a certain number of miles per year. For one of our cars I believe it's 10% due to driving less than 5K per year & one of the other ones is 5% for driving less than 10K. As far as I know you just send them the odometer reading at the end of each year & they just take your word on the number of miles driven each year. --71.184.xxx.xx

I agree that I am not going to let them monitor my driving. I've never had an at fault accident in 46 years of driving. What is even more interesting is that my cars are so old that I don't know that they could monitor it via the car and I don't own a smart phone either. So much for an old IT guy! --138.43.xxx.xx

According to your gent "everyone does this"....

You are being charged extra because you do not comply. It's negative reinforcement and a type of coercion. "We are not forcing you to do this" BUT if you don't there will be penalties. Soon the penalties will be larger. Perhaps we will cancel your insurance and report you to all other insurance companies as well. We have ways of making you comply.

Now take your C-19 shot.

Or there will be penalties.

It's a back door way to force compliance. They can't force you to do something (yet), but they can make your life miserable if you do not obey and comply. --24.180.xx.xx

Until all insurance companies mandate such a device, I'll never allow it on my vehicle. Insurance companies look for ways to raise your rates or pay less or not pay on a claim. There's no way I'd let them have access to this type of info. Plus there's no way they know the context of each action that triggered an alert. --108.69.xxx.xxx

Interesting.

I was at a car toy shop a while back. I inquired about a camera for the front of the vehicle that could record what was happening. I asked the sales manager if I could be compelled to turn over that video in the event of an accident or something else where I did not wish to.

He thought about that for a minute and said no one had ever asked that before and he had no idea. --73.25.xx.xxx

Some of my partners are real jerks! They want the cheapest insurance policies possible no matter the risk! I like to play it save and pay a few more bucks for coverage and service.

So one partner switched his auto insurance to Geico Auto Insurance and save a bunch of money. He has a 20 year old car worth almost nothing, not like a property worth millions.

So I was over ruled and we tried 1 rental with Geico. I tried to explain that since this was a RENTAL and not a OWNER OCCUPIED HOME, Geico was going to farm out the coverage to a re-insurer. And Geico did just that.

Because this policy had Geico and a Second Company covering the rental, they both were working with slim margins --spitting coverage and risk between the two of them.

So of course they sent an inspector out to view the property. This was a "A" grade location with adult tenants, a family of 4. A doctor, a PhD and two children in college. A list came back, "Unless these repair and completed and the property is re-inspected within 30 days of the mailing of the notice, WE ARE BEING CACELLED".

My partner had cancelled the other old policy instead of waiting the 30 days we had to renew the policy. Now that we were being cancelled by Geico, the old insurance company needed to charge us an additional $250 to reinstate the policy.

We had three choices. Do thousands in unnecessary work to keep Geico. Pay $250 to go back to our old insurance company or sell the property.

So instead of saving $200 with Geico, they cost us $250.

Geico didn't like that a brick walkway was elevate from the ground. ON that side of the house water run down from the roof gutters and to the back yard alley way. They wanted us to either lower the walkway or fill in the area between the walkway and block wall fence.

Your always being tracked, and cannot opt out when you download most smartphone apps anymore. Unless you leave your phone home when you leave, your locations are constantly picked up by applications using location service. At a minimum your location is known base on cell tower triangulation. You can’t “hide” or avoid tracking unless you leave your (tracker) smartphones at home and powered off. There are both pros and cons of this, but it’s reality! If you take a photo, it has location data, make a text it bounces off cell towers. Do anything online...breadcrumbs are Everywhere you went with time and date. My insurance company had me take home pics and they verified they were located at my address and cross-referenced county records including exterior pics, USAA I was impressed, I’m in cyber security. --71.211.xxx.xx

I have a friend that works for Northwestern. The "tracker" monitors things like whether/how much you speed and sudden braking. Indicators that you aren't a careful driver.

I declined to participate in that. I speed regularly but safely, and brake suddenly when some idiot swerves over in front of me or a deer runs across the road. I haven't had an accident in 25 years. I think my driving record tells the story better than some computer algorithm.

The best way to fight this is universal noncompliance. If everyone refuses it, I suspect it will quietly go away. --104.230.xxx.xx

Here some insurance companies ask a device to be installed in vehicle where distance along braking, speed is monitored. They provide a modest discount where if live 80 kilometres out of the city there is very little public transit where the only option is to drive or spend a day going back and forth to the city. If the house has wood stove they walk away. So in the end I would consider a regular insurance company. I generally stay within the speed limit where sometimes if posted speed limit is 80 kilometres per hour the vehicle behind is right behind where if had to hit the brakes would be rear ended for sure. Police do not stop for 10 kilometres over the limit. Some major highways the speed limit is 110 kilometres per hour where some people are driving faster. At that speed the fuel consumption goes up 20 per cent. Find in major urban areas there are some very aggressive drivers where had to hit the brakes to avoid a collusion. Here vehicle insurance goes by postal code where some areas insurance is expensive as there are many claims. --99.236.xxx.xxx

That's sneaky - it's also sneaky when you find out that the price that you agreed to with the insurer is ONLY if you have paperless documents - I kicked an insurer to the curb over that bit of subterfuge.

I agree - don't want Big Brother judging my evasive actions and interpreting them as erratic driving.

Heed WMH's advice - Umbrella insurance is only for the coverages that you have with the same company - we realized that a year ago, and moved our truck back to our main insurer. --96.245.xx.xx

that paperless discount also drives me nuts. I do it because I want the discount.

I got vehicle and homeowners through a new company so I also got the umbrella through them. They also covered by atv under the homeowner's policy where my prior company wouldn't cover it and I needed separate policy. My rentals are not under my umbrella because I have them insured through a commercial policy.
