I had a an ac guy replace an ac capacitor. He charged me $50. I am feeling like that is way to cheap. What do you folks think would be fair. I am thinking giving him $100 and telling him he is awesome. Would that be a fair amount or should I up it more? Don't want to over pay, but also want to make sure he takes my calls over the summer as well.

We try to keep a spare one or 2 on hand. That is about the only thing DH can do regarding HVAC. Although he has to be careful as he has a defibrillator in his chest. They can shock you if you're not careful. That being said, IDK if your guy furnished the part as well, but if he said that is what you owed, be happy!

I have a box of 30 a/c start capacitors that cost me around $10 a piece. Some more, some less. By the sound and reaction to a troubled motor trying to start, I can surmise the problem. Then I can take out my tester and see if the capacitor if good or not. My cap meters cost me between $5 and $250.
So in short you guy was smart, trained and capable in determining you needed a new capacitor. In 10 minutes he replaced it and for is time charged $35 plus. To him, that's over $100 per hour...good money for anyone. --47.155.xx.xxx |

If you want to show your appreciation, pay the invoice promptly, write him a note expressing your appreciation for his taking care of your problem & maybe include a small gift card to a local pizza place / sandwich / coffee shop.
I recently did a favor for neighbor who lives in her two family. Basically I just helped her throw a bunch of crap in the back of my dump truck & took it to the local transfer station. I guess from start to finish it took me less than 30 minutes. I just charged her the dumping fee & told her just do someone else a favor sometime. Well she paid the $36.00 dump fee, wrote me a nice note & include a $25.00 gift card for a local roastbeef sandwich joint. I have an AC guy I use for easy small jobs like that. He would charge me $50 for the same thing. He works for a bigger comoany who would charge a whole lot more and pay him less to do the same thing. So it’s a win-win.

I would pay the bill as charged and not add extra as 22# stated I've had it ruin things. I can't explain how or why that happens but it can.

If he's happy with it, just a thank you note goes a long way.
I've done the same, replaced a cap for $50, many times.
The local companies charge as much as $300 to do the same. I don't consider that honest.
