We discovered it's all very well to back up your files to two hard drives, use an actual back-up service, Google Drive, One Drive and Drop Box.
But if you don't have a computer...can't access the backups.
I have (had) a Dell laptop. DH uses only Chromebooks, and that's where I'm typing this. I dumped coffee on my Dell keyboard and despite quick work it's dead. Okay, retrieve backup right? Not without another Windows computer!
So I have ordered a replacement, but in the meantime I am missing all my Outlook email, all of my financial stuff, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.
This time, after the new one is here, I will send the old one out for repair IF POSSIBLE. If not, I will find a cheapo replacment to have on hand for emergencies like this. --50.82.xxx.xxx |

That's a great idea. Keep a set of backup files installed on a backup computer, ready to go. --107.141.xx.xxx |

It would be worthwhile to create a workgroup with the 2+ computers. That way you could backup computer X to computer Y, and computer Y to computer X. There’s no such thing as overkill when it comes to backup redundancy. --172.58.xxx.xx |

I keep all my working files in a Dropbox directory so they are always backed up offsite. I also schedule a backup script to run every Sunday night, copying my working files to an external hard drive. Belt and suspenders. --71.233.xxx.xx |

Also, one benefit of using an offsite backup like Dropbox is that I can access all of my files on my iPhone using the Dropbox app. This has helped me many times when I was not at my desk and needed to look at a file. --71.233.xxx.xx |

I love this subject.
I use a back up system that is easy for me to follow for photos....
All my other notes, such as when to send you rich landlord birthday cards and coupons....ehh, I can lose all those.
But photos...I've lost them in the past and I think I have a way to keep them safe now.
The Triple Drive Method.
Your computer has a hard drive...call it Drive ONE. To this machine you hook up two external drives...TWO and THREE. (Via a hard drive docking station.. Easy plug and play thing).
You copy to ONE, then copy to TWO, then Cut to THREE. After a few months, you put away drives TWO and THREE for safe storage.
Bring out two new drives and start the process over.
Computers should never store documents.
* I buy drives for $43 bucks, the docking station I used was Orion....it was about $40 bucks. The habit is priceless.

I use thumb-drive(s) to back-up all of my important files on. I have quit burning CD's. Plus, I have started buying used desktop computers with Windows 10 for approx. $150.00. So far, I have not been burned on one. --68.63.xxx.xxx |

We seriously back up to 6 different places. But without another Windows computer I can't access some really important files and programs.
So while I am less panicked and sickened that I might be with NO backups, without a computer they are pretty useless.
Hopefully new computer will be here tomorrow, but probably Tuesday... --50.82.xxx.xxx |

I’m glad I’m not the only one obsessive about these things. I run every LLC on a different computer. I do back them up monthly to thumb drives. Everyone thinks I’m nuts because I have an office with so many computers it looks like a Best Buy showroom. My method of madness is twofold. First, I may have one computer crash, but they won’t all go at the same time. Worst case scenario is that I would lose the data and not be able to retrieve it from thumb drive. Very unlikely, but if it ever happened I would only have one property to recreate a file for. Second, the computers last forever because by only having one property on each they get very little use. Kind of like if you alternate wearing 10 pairs of shoes they never wear out. If you only wear one pair every day they wear out quick. --75.133.xxx.xx |

Look at VMware Workstation. You can run multiple instances that look and behave like an individual computer. Combine that with offsite backup such as Carbonite and you will get your desk space back again. Plus offsite storage is the far better solution. --157.131.xxx.xx |
