Today, finally finished the longest rental renovation in history. Ok, maybe not longest, but....

And then, on the way home heard about a brush fire, near my own neighborhood! By about seven on this evening, the fire had spread close enough that we had to evacuate.

Guess I got that rental done just in time! --104.231.xxx.xxx

Thanks, DJ. No houses were caught up in the fire, thankfully. Came quite close though to a brand new neighborhood. And fairly near to several older neighborhoods like mine, a few others.

So, your minister friend would be safe too.

The fire crews are still out, watching, in a few areas, but not near homes any more. We haven’t had a fire in the swamp for many years, and this spring has been dry, so those cattail tops really burned. --70.92.xxx.xxx

We just went through that recently. We were so close to losing almost everything. So scary...and such a helpless feeling. Glad you are clear now! --73.25.xx.xxx

If you have a swimming pool, then you can set up a pump, electric or battery operated, to drain your pool and put water over the roof and grounds of your house.

This could save your house in the case of a fire... --47.155.xx.xxx

We don’t have the pool, but I had wanted to set up our garden hose with sprinklers. Husband didn’t want to. I also wouldn’t have minded setting up garden hoses with lawn sprinklers on the two neighbors closest to the wildfire, but he didn’t like that either. Guess we know who is willing to try in this household.

JB, indeed. I have a new appreciation for calm and ordinary. --70.92.xxx.xxx

Glad all worked out well.

2 years ago there was a paper recycling plant that caught fire. It was a huge fire and they blocked off the whole block or more. It was at the dead end of the street that my rental was on. There were paper ashes in the yard and on the roof of my rental. Way too close for comfort. When the utilities got turned back on it must have surged and it wiped out the compressor on my HVAC but no way to prove it. --73.120.xx.xxx

Well that stinks that the HVAC died, 6x6. But, glad the house made it

Have you thought about having electrician add a whole house surge protector to the panel? I have them on all of mine. Was working on a vacant house one day, with batteries plugged in to charge, and was using a corded tool when there was a loud pop outside, then everything went quiet. Squirrel in transformer or something like that( don’t remember) I didn’t lose anything, neighbors lost some TVs....

To me, the surge protector is just one less difficult conversation with tenants, where ya have to explain that the renter’s insurance they forgot to pay overs their stuff... --104.231.xxx.xxx

I had it done when the electrical panel was swapped, along with much other wiring on all houses, so not sure of pricing for a stand-alone project. I want to say it was about two-three hundred for that line item, but , it’s been awhile, and they were doing a LOT of other electrical upgrades....

Maybe look into having it added on your own house first? My husband makes his living with computers, so he has always had surge protection in mind. But, it can protect the fridge, the microwave, the tv... list goes on.

One house the surge protection was put into the panel, the others all have it in a box just outside of the panel. My current electrician ( no pun intended) prefers the ones outside of the panel. --104.231.xxx.xxx
