NJ Dog problem (by AllyM [NJ]) Posted on: Mar 19, 2021 3:27 PM
Message:

This week a 3 year old child was killed by two pitbulls from the adjacent yard. Two older children and the three year old were playing in their yard in Carteret, NJ, while their mother watched out the window. Two neighboring pits started coming through the fence and she ran out and told the children to run toward the house but the 3 year old did not. The two dogs grabbed him and killed him while the mother threw herself over him to protect him. She was seriously injured and is hospitalized.

They were from Pakistan so possibly did not know what was lurking in the back yard. Neighbors say the dogs were often running free in the neighborhood. Dogs were not licensed or registered. Animal shelters continue to put these dogs up for adoption after some training and warn people they "have to be strong to control this dog if adopting" as dog attacks other dogs on a leash. Where is the common sense? If someone complains they are called a "racist". Current laws are not working. Former health department exec had to leave town after he had a couple unadoptable dogs euthanized. People were threatening to kill him.

Does anyone have any suggestions or know of success for controlling large dogs with strong jaws in their state? PBs have 300 lb per square inch bite with those big jaws. What do you do to control this kind of situation at your rentals? I had a Rottweiler next to one of mine that was not friendly so I put up a higher fence. It passed and owner has not had another as his boys were away at college and if it did not recognize them it would not let them in, so said former owner of Rottie. --108.24.xx.xx

Ally, as you point out, pits and other breeds known for vicious propensities are dangerous. I do not think that that is a racist statement.

I do not know if there is a scientific study showing any relationship between race and dog breed ownership. There is non-scientific "evidence" of the "fact" that many blacks own pits and other vicious breeds, but lots of non-blacks also own pits. And lots of blacks own non-vicious breeds. Banning pits is racially neutral, on its face.

A solution? I don't have one, other than to continue to ban dangerous breeds from my properties. And to blame my insurance carrier for this prohibition. And to point to the numerous black tenants I have had over the years to demonstrate that I am not discriminatory against blacks in my leasing business.

A friend had a pit bull, he carried a small wooden wedge ( think door stop wedge) just incase his pit " locked on" him, or anyone else. This wedge was slipped between dog teeth and pressed up on the roof of its mouth to make it release its grip.

Why on earth would someone want a dog, or any animal, like that? --174.198.xxx.xxx

Some people get "off" on thinking they have control over a dangerous situation. Example, my friend an owner of a large business that ranks #1 in it's field has everything you could ever imagine. A brand new 10,000 square foot home, twins and a wonderful wife. But he has to drive a motorcycle from his estate into town, Los Angeles. Here 1/5 of all divers in the state either have no license, no insurance or expired registration. So my friend almost got killed and was in the hospital for over 6 months, half of that time he was in a coma. Not that he's recovered, he still drives motorcycles....

The same is people who have animals that are dangerous and can not be completely controlled. While I've met 1 pit bull that is a Hospital patient certified comfort dog, he is one in a 1,000.

The idea that a dog has 1 bit before it is deemed dangerous is crazy...

When my neighbors had 2 pit bulls and only a chain link gate to keep them in his yard and I had young kids at home, I didn't stand still. Each time he opened up his gate to park his truck, the dogs could run out and attach children nearby. --47.155.xx.xxx

I read about a way to stop dangerous dogs from acting like that. It was online a couple years ago. A vet can sedate the dog and remove about half of each of their canine teeth, the pointy ones in front, cap the tooth and that's the end of their willingness to attack or bite. I have never seen this discussed again and it seems like the perfect solution when no one wants to euthanize a dangerous breed or dog. Funny how answers to problems arrive, are not used and go away. --108.24.xx.xx

I think I was the one who first addressed the race issue explicitly here. In my area, most pits are owned by blacks and/or by low-life others who want to project an image of being tough guys. I've seen people argue that prohibiting pits is a pretext to discriminate against blacks, which some idiot judge could accept.

As I said above, my insurance company bans various breeds that it considers vicious or dangerous, and that provides me with an "out."

Disagree, 6x6. Dog breeds have certain characteristics - that's what distinguishes one breed from another. A poodle is not a Yorkie and a pit bull is not a labrador.

Not only breeds, but classes. Hunting dogs (retrievers, for instance.) Working dogs (cattle dogs, sheep dogs.)

You don't teach retrievers to retrieve. It is an innate instinctual skill they are born with. Some are better than others of course, but a retriever retrieves: balls, sticks, ducks...

The dangerous breeds were bred to do dangerous things: fight bears, guard the premises, etc.

My three dogs, raised together, obviously same owners: one an Australian Shepherd. That dog would literally herd us together when we went for walks in the woods, circling around and making sure no one left the group. It was just her. We didn't teach her. Our doberman: silent, never barked to speak of but could growl menacingly - his favorite activity was patrolling our yard. We didn't teach him that. Our chocolate lab: a born retriever. Could find the tiniest stick, could catch any ball, swam like a fish (even underwater.) All born behaviors.

Yes, you can teach a dog certain behaviors. But some are just instinct. --50.82.xxx.xxx

I am so sorry to hear about the story.

Thanks, Ally and WMH, for mentioning dental disarming. A friend in San Mateo was walking her small dog of a rare breed. A loose pitbull who had the procedure darted to my friend's dog to "bite" and violently shake it. My friend was kicking the pit bull and screaming at the owner. Luckily, my friend's dog wasn't killed and didn't suffer any broken bones.
