Tenant called HVAC unit is shutting off. Then when they flip the power switch it makes loud noises and starts back up. It shuts off again in couple of hours.

Before I call technician, Can you please suggest some other things to try. Is there some diagnosis I can try to do?

There are not too many things on the furnace it will make a loud noise except a ducting that is buckling or possibly something with the blower motor. I don’t see any easy fix other than if you listen to the loud noises it happened one time only when it first starts up or shut down? If so it might just be a piece of ducting that is buckling and that should be pretty easy to fix. But if it’s more of a continuous noise it probably has something to do with the blower motor. --99.92.xxx.xxx

When is the last time the return air filter was changed?

Ask them to send you a photo of it.

They also might make a short video with the sound, as they turn it on. Forward it to your HVAC guy. He may have an idea before he goes out. --68.229.xxx.xxx

This could be a simple thermostat setting error caused by power outage and a dead battery, dirty air filter, compressor/coil vents, starter capacitor problem, blower motor bearings, etc. There is no way that an average tenant can properly describe a problem that you can diagnose over the telephone.

Last week I had my tenant, a Philosopher, PhD and Chair of his University Department describe over the phone a problem with his Sloan toilet Flush Valve. He said, "When we flush the handle, water is leaking 360 degrees around it". He was wrong! The leak wasn't around the flush handle, it was the Sloan valve water discharge tub though the vacuum beaker into the toilet. Lucky I took with me a complete set of Sloan Parts.

First thing is the filter. If there is not enough air going over the motor it will overheat and shut down the thermo switch until it cools.

It could be many different problems, too difficult to determine from noise alone. After it shuts down, pull the cover on the unit and see what "code" is flashing. That will tell you what is wrong. --68.10.xx.xxx

Picture and recording of sound may help your HVAC guy tell you what it is or what to do.

We had a stuck part and the on call guy told us how to get it unstuck and started. That was 5 years ago, still running fine after using a pencil to nudge the part along.

But don't have the tenant poking around at it. Bring your phone to check you tube out once you get there and hear the noise and see what's going on.

Progress!

Normal furnace start. Change batts in the thermostate. Select temp.

You will hear a little fan motor start- that removes any old CO2 from chamber-- and create a small vacumn. It runs for 30 seconds--- and when the vac is enough the switch will make contact. The switch is a little black canister. When that switch makes-- the glow plug will come on-- when it draws enough current the gas valve senses that and opens allowing gas to light. At the end of the GAS rail is a probe that needs to feel the heat on it-- so it can leave the gas valve open and running. When the chambers get hot enough the big blower comes on and pushes air through the pipes. --99.103.xxx.xxx

Gas furance make a little sound when starting up. Go hear for yourself. Do they have heat? Tell them to stop turning it off and just turn it down so it doesn't run. --172.58.xx.xxx

Thank you ALL for excellent advice. I went to take a look. Changed thermostat batteries. I also noticed that Thermostat buttons were not working right. I went to walmart and bought $20 Thermostat and changed it.

Tenant said, it's been working good.

Thank You!! --184.17.xxx.xxx
