Harpreet Kaur rented out the two-bedroom basement apartment in her Mississauga home to a tenant in December of 2019 with rent paid up until September of last year.That’s when things started to fall apart.First the tenant — a WestJet employee who lost his job during COVID — moved in a friend and both refused to pay the $1,700-a-month rent.
She said she texted them on the first day of every month, but got no answer. Sometime in October, when she texted him that she needed the money to pay bills, buy groceries and pay for her daughters’ university education, he texted back: “I’m sorry, times are hard. With all due respect, find a cheaper schooling option and feed them less expensive food.”
Despite promising to get her something as soon as he could, she said there has been no rent paid, not even a portion, since September.
The two friends have now ramped up their harassment, smoking weed in a non-smoking unit and playing drums at 11 p.m.
“They have money for weed and for everything else but not for rent,” she said, noting she’s been renting the unit for 18 years and never had a problem before.
“I’m getting depressed and angry,” she said, noting she’s the sole breadwinner for her family and they rely on the rent to supplement their household income.
She’s had to take money from her credit line to pay her mortgage . . .

No one understands that many smaller rental housing providers are in with the no rent situation in the province of Ontario. Now the vaccines are starting to be distributed we are hoping the lock downs along with people we be able to return to work again. Most people are getting UI during the pandemic where they contribute to paying some of the rent instead buying new vehicles and other things. Tenants seem that it was not for rental housing providers they would be homeless. A typical house in Mississauga Ontario will easily cost $750,000 dollars or more along with the cost of utilities and upkeep. A condominium costs close to $500,000 along with high fees. If the landlord sells then the new owner can say he wants possession. We are going to wait when the provincial government starts to open hearings at the committee of social justice where there is going to be a backlog cases. The secondary rental market is shrinking every year with the difficult eviction process where it can take six months to year to eviction which is destroying the secondary rental market before the pandemic. --99.236.xxx.xxx |

In Mid-Missouri, I'd be able to throw them out with the judges help if they were violating the lease like that. The smoking, plaing the drums and unauthorized person should be enough, particularly for a basement apartment in the owner occupied home.

FACT: During a previous real estate crash, the many "departments" from the City of Los Angeles were told by the City Counsel and other authorities they needed to be creative and come up with their own budget shortfalls!
From 1990 thru 1997 values declined almost in half! The county assessor should have adjusted the property tax of sold property to the Purchase Price and not an old "Tax Roll".
I had purchased a previous foreclosed apartment house from the lender and got billed over TRIPLE Value on my property taxes. I tried to correct these issues but was told,
"If you can not afford to pay your Property Tax, then you shouldn't be a landlord"!
The Los Angeles County Tax assessor Cheated so many new owners by collecting Higher Taxes, the County had earned $32,000,000 (Thirty Two Million Dollars) in interest.
A class action law suit got around half of the cheated people their money back. The other half were too lazy to fill out a form.

Well over the next year things are going to be difficult until people start getting vaccinated as vaccines are now starting to be distributed. In province of Ontario there is progressive Conservative government in power with a majority where the other leftists parties have no say when legislation is past. All you hear from the leftist parties is more spending and socialism where the solution is nationalize the long term care homes and every else. More then likely there is going to be temporary help where some tenants were receiving $2,000 per month for food and housing which was spent on other things. Now many who are laid off are getting UI where they should be able to pay a portion or all the rent depending on the situation there are in. Until the next election then hopefully they do not vote in the borrow, spend and tax parties into power which is about two years from now. --99.236.xxx.xxx |

My daughter’s landlord had a very similar situation. The tenant downstairs used the moratorium to not pay any rent starting last April. Then became even more of an inconsiderate tenant with loud music and television at all hours of the day and night and smoking in the unit that came into my daughter’s unit. After 8 months of increasing asthma problems from the smoke, and noise issues interfering with her sleep and enjoyment of her apartment she finally gave notice. So now the LL has no income coming in on this 2 unit building. --70.20.xx.xx |
