I have a dirty 1/2" copper pipe I am hoping to sharkbite repair. I need to make 3 connections to the old pipe. It looks bad. I will clean and prep it really good. I am guessing it has at least a little corrosion.

How successful have you been using sharkbites in this scenario?

I need to install a valve and a "T"

Would a compression valve be better then a sharkbite?

shark bite. Clean the pipe (copper) and let her rip.

The secret to shark bites-- make sure there all the way on. The cutting tool for pex has a gage to show how far to push on. Rest assured after doing a few you'll feel the shark bit bottom out and that's all there is.

If your working in areas that the pipe won't move-- use the shark bit that slips over the pipes and then you pull it back to give you room. Slip fit. --99.103.xxx.xxx

I have used sharkbites several times. I did make the mistake of not pushing them on enough. It seems unlikely it will work with a pipe that probably will not come completely clean and have very small deformations/pits etc.

In my experience as long as the pipe is round, that is not deformed by a pair of pliers, it will seal properly. They are very forgiving on surface pitting. Just clean it up with a little emery cloth and I bet you will be fine. --68.10.xx.xxx

Sharkbite fittings are not perfect, they do fail because a many reasons. Copper pipe not cut and deburred properly. Out of round. Too much internal pressure. DO not used in a closed space, like an interior wall that your going to cover. --47.155.xx.xxx

I use them every where. Exception is when where re-habing the whole bath or plumbing because there so expensive. You do know that you can use shark bites to connect copper to pex right? Cut the old copper out and substitute pex. --99.103.xxx.xxx

Sharkbyte make a good temporary repair till it can be fixed correctly. Solder on a valve then pex adaptor and everything is less expensive from that place onward. --76.188.xxx.xxx

I'd just hire a plumber to do it right. The last time I used one, it failed. I haven't used many and fortunately, it was in an accessible spot.

Robert hit it spot on. --23.126.xx.xxx

the only shark bite I've seen leak is one not iinstalled correctly. As with any tool or equipment it's operator error that causes failures.

BTW I've seen many coopper fittings leak due to incorrect fluxing and cold sweat joints.

I recently installed 2 pressure regulators that were shark bite-- rather than 2 or 3 hr job 10 minutes. PR to where pipe came out of slab- then converted to pex and straight union connecting pex to copper. --99.103.xxx.xxx

I have a blast sweating copper pipe. Just get the pipes clean, use the wire brush tools or crocus cloth to get a little etch on them, use flux and compatible solder, and use mapp gas (it's a lot hotter than propane). Watch a U-tube video.

As a materials engineer, I would never trust sharkbite fittings. --108.201.xx.xx

My experience is the actual Shark bite fittings, no leaks if you clean up the pipe and press all the way on. The other quick connects that mimic shark bites... you are asking for trouble. You can clean it up perfectly, still leak down the road. --76.77.xxx.xxx
