I know many of you joked about my guns. I've been packing 9mm Walthers for 12 to 15 months-- with a Conceal Carry Permit. I have some beautiful guns. In the past I've left my guns in the work truck but now carry from morning till bedtime.

So last Thursday I get a call from my MM. He's working in the kitchen of a house we got back and the sliding glass door shatters. My guy sees the kid (20yr old) on his back carport across the creek shooting at the house and windows. my MM is yelling to his work with to call 911 cause he's pinned down on the floor in the kit.

Police show and kid disappears-- but not for long-- cops go over to the carport where he was shooting from and my MMan goes over and identifies the man/kid. Cop asks how much in damages and my guy say 480.00. The mother comes out with 480.00 cash and cop refuses to arrest the shooter.

Cop says if we had fired back we would have been the ones arrested-- cause we had an exit out to the front. OK i get that but at least arrest this jerk. HE'S SHOOTING INTO A HOUSE THAT'S OCCUPIED!!!!!

I couldn't push to hard because I didn't want to come back on Friday and find all the windows shot out.

What the heck is this world coming too?

I want to know where you can get a sliding glass door and an install for $480... :P

It's also not the maintenance man's place to put a price on the damage or speak for the owner.

This honestly sounds like something that would happen in NYS now with the "Bail Reform" laws.

I don't understand the whole paying the amount the MM states and they are "free" ... that doesn't sound right at all. I would definitely contact an attorney on that one.

What would happen if you just stood on your back porch and shot at their house? As long as if there was any damage done and you paid for it the cops would be ok with that?

Where I live, he would have been arrested for who knows what kind of gun charge, firing within xx feet of a residence, attempted assult, not sure.

After arraignment, it would be plead down to disorderly conduct and/or some sort of vandalism because he would say he didn't know someone was in the house and his aim is just really bad - he was shooting at that coyote he thought was chasing the neighbor's little poodle or toddler.

Your guy was 100% wrong in giving a damage amount - even if it were you standing there, giving a dollar amount on the spot wouldn't be something I'd do.

Deanna oh my guy has my full authority. I've trained him and he's no idi--ot. Just so happened I had a spare 6ft sliding door in my warehouse-- it cost 297.00 from lowes. Same price on line today. We put it in Yesterday-- myself my MM and the man who owns the house (my youngest son). We started at 9:30 and finished at 11am. Left the MM to reinstall trim. Needed 3 men to start cause the door was so heavy. FYI the door assy was 297.00. One pane of double insulated glass-- was 365.00-- for one side of the sliding door!!!!!!!!!!! it was cheaper to buy the whole new door...

Any way back to Mr. shooter. I can't believe it myself. But as I said if we escalated we'll have 6 windows shot out when he gets out of "day camp".

I know you think this is crazy but to refresh your memory's.

Wasn't a Wisconsin couple-- who were out in front of their own home keeping looters and arsonists away-- arrested and their guns confiscated and now there being prosecuted by the state AG?

I think this might be a situation where you call the local Prosecuting Attorney and ask them isn't it THEIR job to determine what is prosecuted or not -- and ask why their cops are refusing to arrest someone for firing into an occupied residence?

Must be a getting even thing for "Landlord supremecy".

You're going to be lucky if this criminal doesn't shoot out every door and window tonight and maybe burn it down too.

Soon, if not already, insurance companies will refuse to pay for incidents like this.

I was a jeweler on the road in my youth. And I had to carry guns for protection. Had some people chase me so always used a supped up car that could go over 120 MPH up hill with the A/C blasting. Then as a landlord I also had some problems. But in Los Angeles the police refuse to issue gun permits. Bullet proof vest are outlawed. Gun magazines can only have 10 round max. Non-lethal ammunition is also illegal. I used to have a street sweeper shot gun with a drum carrying rubber bullets and pepper spray, no more.

As a landlord I've had to use guns to protect myself and tenants from gangs. Calling the police was a crap shoot. Half of the time they had only two cars out on patrol in Koreatown and where assigned for other tasks.

A gang took over a building and was having a drug/sex party. When they ran out of bear or smokes, they kick a tenants door in and steel whatever they wanted. The police didn't care.

So I drove to the area and from another street could see around 40 gang members on my property. I called the police and they didn't care. So I told them that wasn't a call for the police to show up, I just wanted to make sure that when someone showed up they bring enough body bags. I had my Uzi, Street Sweeper Shot Gun and 3 handguns. I was going to clean house unless the police came. Finally the police showed up and saw I wasn't kidding....

I agree with Dodge, corrupt or maybe lazy cop. He may know that there is a mountain of paperwork involved with an incident like this and took the easy way out.

I heard police and constables joking once when I used to be on the board for our local community fair. They said something to the effect of pushing the bodies back out into the river current so it floats down to the next jurisdiction.

You've mentioned on here that you own 63 houses, mostly free and clear and that you are basically retired.

A question I have is this: If you sold these houses, you would in all probability have enough money to live comfortable the rest of your life and your wife also.

Several other posters on here seem to be in the same situation. For example, Robert J from Calif has said he controls millions in real estate. Some others also have indicated they have a number of places.

Considering where this country seems to be headed and our situations, what is the reasoning for not just cashing out and avoiding these deteriorating situations?

Rents Due-- yes moving forward lesser of 2 evils or 3 evils. If he was arrested maybe we would have to be paying for that door while mommy tells the judge some sob story.

Yes I'm 70 and I have family. My son has rentals of his own and we work together. I just can't cut and run-- yes it would be comfortable-- who here does this just for comfort? If our baby (those who have quantity understand) and I just don't ant to stop doing what I love so much. It's not the buying Richard- those days are over. Its the fixing - rehabbing and working with renters that makes our days worth while.

Ken the words flow very easily--- would you want to kill some 20 yr old for shooting out windows? Bottom line I think when in court had we fired back-- that's what it would come down to.

I feel like that things have been like this for a while. It's not that I am against the police but they are a real joke anymore.

Alley good one and exactly--- how many times we hear-- you know he had a gun he was shooting last week and no one did anything about it.

6 bye I don't think the cops are jokes-- I think they see and are being told "stay back" then add no bail needed and they walk right out the door.

When I was a young teen one of my father's hunting buddies was in the woods, drawing a bead on a nice deer...when somebody across the way shot it, shooting directly at him! The guy who shot was not a member of the club, he was poaching. Dad's friend waited until the guy walked out to the deer...then walked out himself. He told him he had two options: game warden or leave your weapon and walk away. He left a nice Savage .300 that was always Wayne's favorite rifle from then on. I think it gave him pleasure to know he had taken it from someone else. But it was a nice rifle.
