I just received a certified letter in my mailbox. The carrier had removed the green tag without asking me for my signature, so I went to the post office and inquired. It's a COVID policy so the carriers aren't exposed to human contact. The manager told me that the post office is considered an agent, so the carrier can sign and it's considered the same as if the recipient signed. THEY'VE BEEN SERVED!

So if any of you are trying to achieve service and are afraid that your tenant won't sign for the certified mail....this is your chance! Send it out quick before the policy changes again!

I would want to obtain the actual written directive or better yet the specific citation in the DMM (Domestic Mail Manual) which allows such.

Without such proof I could see a judge tossing out your claim using this device.

Covid policy allows carrier to sign when delivering. UPS, Fedex, and post office have been doing this. In fact I just sent a letter today with tracking, as the postal clerk said no sense in paying for certified since the carrier can sign with covid.

I don't know that my judge ever sees the actual signature on the card. His computer summary just says SERVED.
