Every now and then when I search social media to check applicants, etc., I search names in our own household. We've had our names removed several times, but they keep coming back on different sites in one form or another.

This latest check even showed one of our birthdays, including the year. At this point, I'd rather pay a service to keep our information private; I don't want to keep checking this. Any ideas on a good service to use? --71.246.xxx.xx

Nice thought, but not really possible. Your (all our) PI (Personal Information) has been stolen so often (look up Equifax data breach for example) and copied to so many locations that it has become impossible to clean it all up.

Additionally, many offer their PI freely on the internet.

Just out of curiosity, do you happen to have a facebook page? In your name? Is your birthday listed? Town you live in? Any photos of you? --97.113.xx.xxx

If you have ever applied for some types of loans/cards remotely they verify your identity by pulling public records info and you answer the questions. Stuff like where you lived in 1984? What color/make was your first car? What highway was your home near in 1969? There will be a half dozen or questions. The older you are the harder the “test” is to pass. --70.20.xx.xx

Now only have two computers with Windows 10 where only use when absolutely necessary where the other computers using Linux 20 operating system so when go into websites information is not being recorded as interests and what I interested in buying is not passed on. Linux 20 operating system can be downloaded then put on a flash drive then installed in a desktop or laptop. Unlike Windows 10 Linux operating systems do use up the memory where a older computer that is completely functional does become obsolete. Google keeps reminding me that I am using a third party system where will never give access as my personal information is mine alone. I dislike ads on products that I am never going to buy. --99.236.xxx.xxx

I’ve been trying to perfect this for years. I go as far as to use a vacant home I own as my physical address for everything. As mentioned, I don’t know that it is possible to erase what is already there. I think a better approach is to do your best to alter the existing information. If you use a different birthday and enter it into 30 different sites then eventually that is what shows up on the search sites. The 30 data collection hits will outweigh the one date they have ( that is actually the right one). If you use the birthdate ( and address) of someone who has the same name as you, it skews that data and the search sites start to co- mingle your information with theirs as well as your family’s information with their family’s. So it doesn’t erase your information but kind of let’s you hide in plain sight. --75.133.xxx.xx

Go to search engine DuckDuckGo and type in - internet privacy. After review of several articles it should become absolutely clear how much privacy you have - ZERO. --184.21.xx.xx

Nellie, I needed to sign up for the Medicare Subrogation/ Reimbursement Program (not the official name). I could not pass the test -- how do I know what year I signed up for my Wells Fargo Visa credit card, or other trivial data like that? I don't even know the date I got my CA drivers license or my NV drivers license.

I needed to go to get a notarized statement of ID for those bureaucrats!

Well, this is discouraging. Maybe RentsDue can provide a detailed step-by-step tutorial on how to "hide in plain sight" - links on where to enter fake birth dates, etc.? I'd pay for this!

We can't really use a vacant home as a street address, as they all stay rented - maybe we can find a vacant lot. Or the street addresses of post offices, as were used for many of the fake ballots in Georgia.

CX - yes, we have a fb page that is rarely used and locked down from the public. Fake birthdate, no town or mobile number, and only a handful of non-public photos posted in 2009 or earlier. (We have another completely fictional account for posting available rental homes. When response is received, I respond in private message with manager's hangouts number for interested party to text. Also, no exterior photos of available home - I only post interior photos.) --71.246.xxx.xx

OK Chris, looks like you're doing pretty good with respect to FB, in not freely broadcasting your PI like many do.

Few more things to look at:

Gmail-- they (Google parent company) have in their Terms of Service the right to read the contents of any Gmail emails, and the contacts. Even if you don't use a Gmail account, could any of your PI been included in any emails that were sent to Gmail recepients?

Zooom-- Early versions (might still be in current version, haven't checked recently) of the app had access to your contacts list. Could any of your correspondents that had your info in their contacts list have installed the app, which slurped up the data to Zoom, and (arguably more importantly) their non-explicitly-listed third party "partners?"

Misc. smartphone apps-- Example: "Flashlight" app (turns phone into a flashlight) by default requires access to the contacts list. MANY such apps slurp up the contacts list and monetize it. (Why?) Again, any correspondents that might have your PI in their contacts lists may have unwittingly leaked out your PI (Personal Information) via such ubiquitous apps.

Anyway, my money is on your PI went public with one of the Equifax data breaches. Over 150 MILLION records were hacked. What is the US population? Think of what all your PI is in a credit report? --97.113.xx.xxx

I think you're right, CX - it was probably from the Equifax data breach. (I did file online for the $125, but if anything at all, that will probably diminish to a dollar or less by the time they cover everyone who filed!)

I'm pretty OCD about privacy - online banking is always from a PC rather than from my phone, and I actually read all the permissions before downloading phone apps.

ZOOM is monitored by China, so we don't touch it.

I do use gmail, but I don't list birthdays or physical addresses. If I must e-mail a phone number, I'll only send my hangouts phone # since google has that one anyway.... But it's possible that someone else might have sent my PI - don't know....

I'm pretty certain that you are right about Equifax being the culprit. I hadn't thought of that possibility until I read your post. --71.246.xxx.xx
