We are going to install an exhaust fan in a bathroom and are trying to keep it as far away from the heat vent as possible. Is there any reason not to put the exhaust fan directly above the shower? --24.9.xx.xxx

I would do it. Perhaps there are special ones with lights for this purpose --172.58.xx.xxx

IMO, it will make taking a shower colder.

Also, not sure, but I think it would have to be rated to be placed directly above the shower. --70.16.xxx.xxx

Personally, I put it just outside the shower, where it (typically) won't get water splashed on it. This is usually, conveniently, right by the toilet, too. --68.229.xxx.xxx

As long as the fan is GFCI protected either by being on the load side of a GFCI outlet or on a circuit controlled by a GFCI breaker & is rated by the manufacturer for use in wet areas, it shouldn't be an electrical hazard. However being right above the shower will make a draft across anyone using the shower which will make for an uncomfortable shower experience.

If you install the bathroom vent / fan directly above the tub or shower, it must be listed as suitable for such locations, and must be installed on a GFCI protected circuit – this is every manufacturer’s (not the code’s) requirement. --71.174.xxx.xx

Exhaust fan in the shower ceiling. It's done all the time. Most efficient location to exhaust the steam vapor-- close to its source. --97.113.xx.xxx

Best location for a exhaust fan is the middle of bathroom. Install a humid switch where only activated when the humidity level goes up. Check with electrical codes where see if possible to install in shower area. A decent exhaust fan only needs to operate a maximum of 15 minutes or less to remove the humidity. The heat vent is not constantly putting out heat where there is not significant heat loss. The only other option is use a dehumidifier then all the humidity will go into the pan. --99.236.xxx.xxx

I had my electrician wire the fan so it goes on when the light goes on. I put in very quiet fans so you don’t even know they’re on. --99.23.xxx.x

Installing a humid setting switch that will automatically turn on and off exhaust fan no matter when light is turned on or off. Find tenants are really indifferent to doing anything where the humidity builds up then complain about mold. A exhaust fan is sized according to bathroom size so the humidity will exhausted outside. --99.236.xxx.xxx
