I have a bought home built in 1907 I am flipping. I have been advised by a restorer of very old homes that the walls, ceilings are covered with old growth horizontal pine bead board which is painted with lead based paint. The old growth wood is highly sought after so I want to keep it in the home. I was advised to seal my lead based paint with a mixture 3 parts Elmer Glue and 1 part water. This will dry clear and re-glue firmly any peeling paint. Therefore sealing the paint while still retaining the crackled painted wood look.

Does anyone have experience with this method and would it effectively seal the lead based paint? I do not want to repaint the wood. --71.135.xx.xx

You are playing with fire! Liability and hazards. Instead I took my 1907 3+2 home and installed 1/4" drywall over the interior walls. Since there was deep molding around the doors, windows and baseboards, sticking a 1/4" of drywall over the walls was an easy fix. Then I used a bonding primer and put several coats on the wood. Then painter over that with a thick paint designed to encapsulate lead paint. --47.155.xx.xxx

And there is always Peelstop Clear.

I dont know your market. But you may want to get an opinion from a local realtor. How this will affect the sale price.

You are talking about not only keeping the lead paint. But highlighting or keeping the look of it cracking or peeling off. --75.182.xx.xxx

Bought a binding primer from Sherwin William that worked really well on peeling paint, followed directions precisely. Painted 2 coats over it and it painted like a dream. Didn't think it would work, but WOW. --75.11.xx.xx

Well, do they still make paint stripper? Confused here. Old growth pine bead board would be really pretty stained and coated with varnish. So someone painted over that with lead paint and you are worried about exposure to lead and also destroying the look. Would you consider stripping the wood down to it's original finish? Horrible job. If it's already painted I don't see any value to it and just paint over it to seal in the lead. Elmer's washes off. --71.104.xx.xxx

Hire a lead person to advise, this is the albatross that is killing many homes now. --76.188.xxx.xxx
