I can't light my pilot light with bbq lighter due to the fact it is to long of a reach. I have tried folding a piece of toilet paper on the end of a wire but it doesn't stay lit long enough to light the pilot. Please help. I have to keep calling the plumber to light it. As it blows out every time it gets windy. --50.70.xx.xxx |

On water heater or furnace? I've never heard of a pilot lite so far as to not to be able to use lite stick?
What is plumber using?
U could buy a telescoping -- arm with small clip on the end to put match in. --99.103.xxx.xxx |

Or possibly those, super-long fireplace matches.
They may be longer. --68.229.xxx.xxx |

If it keeps blowing out, you should get it diagnosed. I live in a higher wind area and have a standing pilot that's only blown out once. --70.44.xxx.xx |

At my own house the boiler pilot goes out a few times a year. In my case it's due to low street pressure during real cold snaps when their is a high demand for gas. Occasionally in some parts of my town they bring in large compressors to help boast the line pressure.
For the last few years they have been up grading the local distribution system which helping to eliminate the problem.
You should be able to get an extra long BBQ lighter or a telescoping holder for wooden matches so you can light it yourself. As others mentioned it's not normal for gas pilots to just blow out & you should have a qualified person diagnose the problem. --71.174.xxx.xx |

They sell a telescopic match holder to light pilots in furnaces. But if your pilot is hard to light, then something needs to be adjusted. --47.155.xx.xxx |

Eventually the thermocouple wears out where that needs to be replaced along the setting of the flame needs to be adjusted. I have avoided buying anything with pilot lights even the gas stove has electric ignition for the oven and burners. Most newer furnaces and boilers have no standing pilot or require a chimney where can vented directly through the wall. --99.236.xxx.xxx |

Sorry it was the pilot light on my furnace. But I will try the long matches, hope it will work. --207.195.xx.xxx |
