It looks like Airbnb is jumping on board with the digital purge. Apparently (maybe John can fact check this), they are looking into reservations that happened around DC on January 6, double checking with those persons social media accounts and banning them from Airbnb for life!

The attack of the communists on the conservatives will be/is widespread and unrelenting. They figure that with this last maneuver in Washington that they have conservatives at a big disadvantage and they are moving forward with their intentions.

As a landlord, (sorry, we are likely no longer going to be allowed to use that word), rather housing provider, I think we should immediately take steps to protect our interests, be these steps more careful screening, alternate/multiple accounts, multiple contact points, and more. Much more.

I don't think it will be long before the communists seek to identify and punish/cancel us if we dare not capitulate to their demands. How long until this airbnb type attack on us spreads to regular rentals. Until rental units are identified? Until, if the tenants or the owners or either of them are not communists, they are set upon? Until their properties are vandalized and worse? Until they are personally attacked? Will the banks refuse to allow landlords to have accounts? Will banks call our loans because we don't comply? Will the government confiscate our properties (well, it could be argued they have already done that by telling us we have no right to ask for or expect rent, but we must continue to pay property tax, maintenance, insurance, etc)?

Tenants will not stay in a place where they are under constant harassment.

If landlords do not take steps to deal with this, I think there is the possibility we will wind up with vacant destroyed properties, likely little or no cash flow and massive financial problems. (but many of us already have that,or worse, freeloaders living in our places and not having to pay, thanks to the govt).

The National Assoc of Reaaltors yesterday clamped down on what any member may say, publically or in private under penalty of heavy fines and more.

Soon, it may be that if you are registered to vote as anything other than an "approved" party, you will be denied. Title companies, banks, and others that buy into this will refuse to deal with you. You will be identified, doxxed, and communists will arrive at both your home and all your rentals to "teach you a lesson". If your tenants happen to be conservatives, they will be subjected to the same thing, even if the landlord is not a conservative. (It would be so easy for them to identify conservatives via voter rolls, etc).

But, of course, conservatives could identify them the same way.

I wonder how long it will be until some new law is passed telling us we cannot discriminate by political affiliation? Until lawsuits fly because we would not rent to a communist?

Sounds to me like they are discriminating.

We as landlords could not deny someone based on a persons political beliefs, but they feel they can?

Correct. Sandy is mistaken. LLs would be free to discriminate based on political beliefs. It is not a Protected Class.

If someone says that they support Elon Musk as President, I can deny them. :)

Yes, thank you John...what airbnb is doing doesn't sound much different that what some people on here do, denying someone because of what's on their FB page.

Um, discrimination is legal as long as it isn't against a Protected Class.

The example given in the Landlord Guide for Michigan is actually "people who drive blue cars." :) It flat out states that, as a landlord, you can deny all people who drive blue cars -- because car color is not a protected class. :)

I understanding the concern......but from only a Landlord business perspective - Do I REALLY want to rent to a group of folks that are in town only to tear up a place?

That's interesting. If they show up with the confederate flag I basically give them the keys.

I've had a couple of T's with the Confederate flag on a vehicle. I know you will be horrified by that. Turns out they were the hardest working and most polite folks I've ever rented to.
