Cuomo Proposal Would Prevent Utilities from Disconnecting Service for Non-Payment

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a proposal to prohibit utility disconnections in regions that are under a state of emergency as part of the 2021 State of the State. The Governor will propose legislation that will apply to electric, gas, water, telecommunications, cable and internet services. Utilities that fail to comply will be subject to penalties . . .

Free rent, now free utilities too? Heard Venezuela has frequent electrical blackouts . . . coming soon to a city near you?

If I was a utility company I'd just shut down for "unexplained outage and needed repairs". To everyone. Perhaps tens of thousands of customers without utilities might have something to say.

Cable? People who lost their jobs, or didn't lose their jobs, must have free cable to stop the spread of Covid?

Around here, I already get stuck with the tenant's water, sewer, trash service plus a few other utility charges, if the tenants don't pay the bill. So far, I'm not getting saddled with their electric and gas bill.

But, yes, I'm surprised it took this long to add free utilities to the free rent. --76.178.xx.xx

Haha. I find it funny that people still get surprised by this stuff. Just wait for the "housing is a right" legislation that is about to fall off the cliff soon. I bet it's been sitting on desks well polished for a while now. Just waiting for the right puppet to come along and sign. --70.44.xxx.xx

Not sure about at this moment but I know here, at the start of COVID, that the utilities were not allowed to be shut off by the utilities companies but the bill would keep adding up. So this isn't really something new unless they are trying to cancell the bill as well. --73.120.xx.xxx

"still owed, not cancelled"

We all know the statistics. Once a tenant owes more than a month, the odds go way down it will ever be paid.

What if that same tenant owes for a YEAR of rent, electric, cable, water, gas, wifi, etc.?

Zero chance it will ever be paid. --69.80.xx.xx

being stunned by what YOUR Govt might do to YOU should no longer be a surprise

when I race offshore we plan for every contingency - I also do it for life in general

what is your contingency plan if YOUR govt decides to close down your removal of $$$$$$ from your bank account

If you think it can't happen here then you have not observed what has happened to free speech in the last 72 hours

Yesterday Antifa marched in full riot gear in Times Square

Dont worry - it won't happen in your neighborhood.....famous last words

Sailmaker, this would make a good new thread!

Always running contingency plans in business and life in general. Have been pondering a contingency plan if govt does the unthinkable you mention and others; haven't come up with a comprehensive plan. As a rule I never put all my eggs in one basket.

What are others doing? We can always use more alternatives. --75.11.xx.xx

If anyone been down to the extreme left wing tenancy advocate group meetings everything they propose like everyone who a rental complex should not build equity along taking a reverse mortgage where I doubt any bank would provide a mortgage under those circumstances. The chairs as one tenant are getting half million a year in generous subsidies where they own houses for themselves instead of investing in non-profit affordable rental housing. In a period of ten years that easily puts down a substantial down payment on a large apartment complex where they have absolutely nothing to show for it with the money they are receiving. One day those nutcases need to face reality where governments should cut off all the generous subsidies then they earn the money they are receiving. --99.236.xxx.xxx

Richard, why would a utility shut down as you suggest? Utilities are entitled to a profit by law and customers have no choice but to buy from them, so they just get to raise prices on the remaining paying customers. --73.141.xxx.xx

Maybe the trick to survival is to form a left-wing tenancy group, drive landlords out of business, then swoop in, boot the tenants (if you're the left-wing group, laws don't apply) then buy the property for a steal from the now crippled landlord. Then rent to the non-paying tenant, use that non-paying tenant to fundraise with the advocacy group, and pocket the profits.

I think this will become the next landlord model of doing business.

Wow, phone, cable and internet too? Wonder when maid service will become a right? --108.69.xxx.xxx
