Squatters hold California bedroom hostage [Woman cannot remove deadbeats--per California law]

Poonam Sandhu rented out the master bedroom of her Watsonville, California home to a couple through Airbnb. Now they refuse to leave or pay rent. Sandhu says she's been forced from her own home by some terrible tenants . . .

Comments: Had a squatter in my Calif house. I hired her to clean it to get it ready to rent. She decided to stay ... without permission and no rent. Cost me $4,000 to get her out . . .

I read a story not to long ago about a 65 year old man having the same issue. A couple from New York moved into his loft and then refused to leave. He spent months trying to get them out to no avail. His solution was to take 3 Black Widow spiders and slip them under the door. One of the renters was bit in the toe which ended up being very painful. There was no proof the old man had anything to do with it as the spiders are native to the area. The couple moved out as soon as they got back from the hospital . . .

Treat for termites. Two birds, one stone...

Maybe.. the thing is that this was a private deal on the side off of AirBNB. Maybe this story will keep idiots from making side deals . . . "

I used to be easy about renting apartments - easy to evict if they were deadbeats a few years ago, so give them a chance, right? Not anymore - I will leave apartments vacant before I risk another "Pacific Heights" movie scenario . . . Watch the trailer for Pacific Heights on Youtube if you haven't seen it yet . . . a must see LL movie --174.65.x.xxx

In a vacant apartment I installed window locks, thumb screw type using now Allen Security Screws. I also rekeyed the locks. The window installed in the back door on a private porch has been fitted with Lexan (Bullet Proof Plastic).

I also installed lights on a timer. Still a homeless person from the local encampment tried to scale my back block wall to the building. On the top of the block wall I have bird burrier spikes every 2 inches. He rolled over another buildings trash bin and tried to stand on it to get to my property. The lids were plastic and he fell into the trash bin. He got injured and was taken to a local clinic for treatment.

He was telling the police it was my fault because he couldn't scale my property because I installed nails on the block wall fence. Of course the City sent me a violation and ordered me to remove it. I had obtained a permit to install Bird Burrier Spikes, so long as the fence was at least 6 feet tall and I posted signs. I put signs on both sides of the fence. Metal with baked enamel lettering. So I was Okay.

In Los Angeles, the City and Insurance Companies don't want an owner to protect their property, just leave a key under the mat for any stranger to move in...

Thanks for sharing.....my siblings and I just inherited a home in CA and were tossing around the Air B&B idea yesterday. We have already ruled out m2m rental....one less available rental home for a family (its a 5 bed 3 bath home in a desirable neighborhood).

The government has no idea what they are doing to the small time LL

I know, on a large scale 1 less rental won't mean anything, but for us it could prove costly if we got someone in and they refused to leave/pay. --174.193.xxx.xx

I think with this eviction moratorium issue, that vacation rentals could be facing problems with squatters. Screening is much less careful for vacation renters and once they get in, you might not be able to get them out again. Just something to be aware of.

I wonder if it might also end up a problem for those landlords who do remote applications, allowing strangers in to look at the house with no one there to supervise them. Once they open the door with the key, they might decide to stay and it might be difficult to get them out again.

They are tenants, you gave them the key, the can get a lease from the stationery store. I can see some judges refusing to give you an eviction hearing. --76.178.xx.xx
