Last Known Surviving Widow of a Civil War Veteran Dies at 101 in Missouri

...Jackson's death was confirmed in a statement by the Missouri Cherry Blossom Festival, which revealed that she died on Dec. 16 at Webco Manor Nursing Home in Marshfield, Missouri, where she had been living for many years. Though she kept details of her life mostly private, Jackson recently disclosed to her minister while working out the details of her funeral that she had married James Bolin, a 93-year-old Civil War veteran, when she was 17 years old, the statement read . . . Irene Triplett died in 2020 as the last survivor to collect a Civil War pension (as a widow).

W,

Interesting.

Wonder what the pension was? A bag of flour and a pound of coffee each month?

Said in an article she was getting $73 per month back in 1939. 3 $20 gold double eagles plus a $10 gold coin plus $3 silver dollars - modern money - $5000 per month equivalent? --176.113.xx.xxx

This is portrayed like a charming, interesting piece of history, but today people are grossed out when a 22-year old marries Larry King or Mick Jagger. Actually, if she was 17, that makes James Bolin a rapist. Cancel him, desecrate his grave and shun his descendants. That's the D e m o c r a t way, right? --50.32.xxx.xxx

17 year old marries 93 year old....

Creepy.

She married the guy 54 years after the last shot was fired. Not sure that qualifies as a "war widow" in spite of getting a pension.

This is weird, I seem to remember seeing this exact same story about 15 years ago.

Also the one about the guy who had a pet hippo he rode around and then got eaten. That was even the same guy, same name.

You'd think he would have learned his lesson the first time, lol.

Maybe Associated Press is just kicking these things up again for ratings --75.35.xxx.xxx

If she was 17 and he had one foot on the grave then it would seem like a lovely gesture to keep the benefits coming in. More of A financial plan? --172.56.xx.xxx

Wow, that is crazy to think about. Imagine what she experienced through her life and how much things have changed from the older people she knew as a teenager to people today. I wonder if the marriage was to just give her a pension? Still creepy to think about. --74.130.xxx.xxx

I knew someone who did that years ago. He was retired military and they had been friends for many years. They got married late in life so that she didn't need to struggle in her later years... both readily admitted it was a monetary marriage only...if I recall, they never even lived in the same house. --72.70.xxx.xxx
