I had a mystery leak in a shower. Turns out water goes in the channel for the shower door and drains onto the floor under the tub and runs across the room. Handyman recommends removing the doors, patching the tub and installing shower rod. I think this will be ugly. It's an avocado tub (with colored doors). I'm thinking the solution is to back out the screw(s) and shoot silicone in the hole and reinstall them. If that doesn't work then re-think things. Is there another fix I'm not thinking of?

This is a small starter apt, so I'm not upgrading the bathroom at this time. The bath floor is newer vinyl sheet. None of the water got in the subfloor (I can see from the basement below). --24.194.xxx.xxx

I think I'd try backing out the screws and using silicone, plus using some of the caulk strips that are at Lowe's along the edge of the shower door frame. Don't depend on it as caulk, but to divert water after caulking, I've had some success. Make sure it is freshly made, as the adhesive can be iffy.

While I get that it is a cheap place and you don't wish to spend much, is it possible to pull out the old tub and replace it with a one piece shower or tub with shower? --67.43.xxx.xxx

You also may need to caulk the corners where the bottom channel meets the side channels as that is where I have found mine leaking before. --73.120.xx.xxx

If you haven't already checked, I had the same problem with a new Tenant. She complained a ton about water on the bathroom floor. Nobody else before her ever mentioned a problem nor did I see any evidence, like the now wet baseboards, etc. So I asked if she was using a 'bathmat' when she got out of the shower. She had NO idea what a bathmat was! Gave her a nice, absorbent mat and problem solved. It was her and the 2 kids splashing and not wiping up the drips when they got out.Water ran down the tiles to the wall and that was the problem. --72.199.xx.xxx

Barb, replacing the tub/ surround and the vsnuty is on my future list to do. The outside edges are fully caulked. You think the caulk strip will sit flat Under the door track?

6x, good tip about the ends.

Sorta, I've had my share of sloppy shower tenants. This problem was replicated by the handyman.

RB I'll check out that caulk.

Many times I'll have to replace the rubber seal under a shower door to prevent water from leaking out onto the floor. Or the splash guard inside the shower at the bottom of the door has separated from the frame and only need to be cleaned and re-caulked. --47.155.xx.xxx

I was thinking about the caulk strip up against the door track on the inside. Not under the door track. --67.43.xxx.xxx

Potatoes, how about you try the caulk fix (RB suggested a good one, better then silicone) and if that doesn't work, replace the doors with rod and curtain knowing it will be ugly, also knowing you plan to replace it all soon? --97.126.xx.xx

Well be tenant just started in Oct so I'm not inclined to do a whole bathroom for a 500 apt and it's not an ideal project w tenant in place. I am trying to avoid making it ugly. At this point the avocado tub w colored green glass doors and the vanity sink, w the plastic sears medicine cabinet has a 1971 vintage vibe lol. --24.194.xxx.xxx

Small potatoes, The silicone or caulk tips will probably work, as well as Robert's tips on rubber sealing.

For a point of reference, two of us removed the glass doors from a harvest gold bathtub of the same 1970s era. It took about half an hour to remove, clean up any residual caulking from the old door tracks, fill and caulk the screw holes from the door tracks in the tile on the side, (I think there were only 4 small holes), and install a new, screwed in shower rod. It opened up the bathroom and everything had a fresher look.

Hang a tension rod with curtain inside the tub area. She will then have to slide the door, slip behind the clear curtain and shower. Done. Then if you have to remove the slider doors its all ready to go. I would add caulk everywhere and replace screws with the special kind that dont rust. More caulk. Get the expensive kind. Go at it! --172.56.xx.xxx

Shower doors are plain old nasty and hard to clean

A shower curtain can be swapped out quarterly and it is so much nicer to keep up - as long as they keep it inside the tub --24.101.xxx.xx

Sir Walter you may have a point that there should only be small holes in the tub to seal after removing the doors.

I'd upgrade to a curved shower rod, but I would not want to buy/own a shower curtain. That seems like a personal choice.

I think I will do the caulk first and if that fails remove the doors.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.

I have decided to just remove the shower doors, not a big fan anyway.

Looking for recommendations for curved shower rods. I see some are tension rods. Do they stay up? I have a curved rod that is screwed in place. I do not remember the brand but I don't like it a lot. --24.194.xxx.xxx

One thing to watch out for with the shower rods is that they won't rust. I put a brand new expensive rod in my rental and the tenants kept keeping the door closed all the time even though I asked them not too and it rusted bad and had to be thrown away. It was supposed to be stainless. Of coarse I also ended up with mold in the bathroom.

I put a tension rod in place for the next tenants and have heard no complaints but they don't have kids. --73.120.xx.xxx
