I’m Reno-ing a unit and it’s so short on storage, I think I need to install some pre-fab cabinets in the mud room. Is there a brand from the big box stores that’s suitable for a rental? Just plain white would be perfect. --67.172.xxx.xxx |

Yes, plenty available. Probably about 45-75 per cabinet new.
If the place is suitable for used ones maybe check Habitat Restore or FB marketplace in your area. Those maybe 20-25 each. --75.7.xx.xx |

A couple of thoughts.
1) What types of things would you think your tenant would be storing there. Coats/boots or Christmas decorations or pantry goods? That will give you an idea of what depth and style would work best. Pantry goods would be 12” deep, but coats would be 24” deep.
2) You probably don’t want to get the cheapest available at the big box stores as they are cheap, look cheap, and will not last for more than 1 tenant, if that. I would try to find something a bit above base price. --70.16.xxx.xxx |

Laura,
In my Lowes store they have inexpensive cabinets in the shelving area, different from the cabinet aisles. Same at Menards. They are not super durable.
We use a lot of regular kitchen cabinets straight off the shelf. Don’t be fooled by the cheaper unfinished brand. Putting on a finish takes A LOT of time and expense.
To consider- we have been adding lots of wire shelves in odd areas to increase value with more storage space -over the laundry, mudroom, garage, we even ran them on the walls of a low end kitchen. People say it looks like restaurant shelving.
Easiest is the slotted strips (“standards”) screwed into studs, then brackets for the shelves. A 12” standard will hold 2 shelves. This can handle a lot of weight. Nothing to paint or maintain.
