I am trying to figure out if the vinyl floor in my kitchen is completely glued down, or just glued at the edges. Going to put waterproof laminate over it if it is all glued down. Need to tear it up if it is not. How far in from the edges should the vinyl glue be? I pulled up a section about 16 inches From the edge and the glue is still continuing. Does this mean it is likely all glued down? I would re-glue the piece I tore up and just install over the top. --174.226.xxx.xx

One piece vinyl goods flooring is supposed to have glue under it everywhere! You can do some small tests. With a utility knife cut out a 1 or 2 inch square on three side and see if it will lift. Then if there was glue, you can re-glue that piece back down. --47.155.xx.xxx

The days of completely glued vinyl have disappeared, Robert. My dining, kitchen, short hall, and full bathroom are all one piece, done with no glue. Been there, oh, about fen years or so, no sign of movement. I was impressed with the installers; we were sure they would have a seam somewhere, or glue around the edges. Nope!

Laura, could you pull out an appliance and check? Of course, appliances sometimes ‘glue’ the vinyl down, just from the weight. --172.58.xx.xx

Thanks, guys! I think I will cut out a piece in the center to check. --67.172.xxx.xxx

I'm guessing that its glued down in its entirety. When I've used the kind that you only glue the perimeter I'm pretty sure it only required a few inches of glue. Most installers do the minimum required so at 16" I think you're OK. Since you're putting a floating floor down anyway I would just go over whats there as long as its in OK shape. Laminate is routinely installed over an underlayment thats not glued down so I don't know why it would matter whether or not this vinyl is glued down. --70.178.x.xx

Laura,

I have laid floors with glue around only the edges but most floors are all glued and incredibly time consuming to remove.

Just overlay if your new material is stiff. If the floor has texture consider upgrading to a hard plank to avoid the labor of removing. Allure will soften and conform to the shapes under it.

BRAD
