Personal experience why credit reports shouldn't solely be used in determining credit worthiness. Not sure how this will actually effect my credit score - not that I care.
I really don't need credit at this point in my life for anything other than if buy properties costing more than my existing fund from recent sales I've made.
I purchased an expensive item last week and was of course offered a better deal to finance through them. I decided to do it and then was going to pay it off almost immediately.
Turns out my credit was denied. Rejection letter said they couldn't verify my home telephone number. Hello ... I've had the same telephone number (in my name) for 40ish years !!!!

Are you sure you didn't have your credit files frozen and forgot to unfreeze them before you applied for this? I've done that a couple times. --72.188.xxx.xxx |

Going debt free and using no credit for years also creates a problem that none of the "experts" tell you about. --73.120.xx.xxx |

Credit is a funny thing. When you need it you get denied. When you don't want credit, the banks try to shove it down our throats.
Citibank wanted me to move my real estate accounts to their bank. So I gave them a shot. I was buying a strip mall and was short a few bucks, around 25% of the purchase price. They turned me down. I asked why because I was a preferred Citigold customer. They said that they changed the lending rules and I wasn't going to borrow enough money to make it worth their while!
So instead of borrowing money to close the deal, I closed out a couple of accounts and came up with the money I needed that way..... A teller had to get the managers permission to cut me a cashier's check. The manager asked me what I was using the money for? I told him to by the stipmall, to one they decide not to lend me because it wasn't worth their time.. --47.155.xx.xxx |

Your phone number is not part of your credit worthiness nor credit score. They were using some other source and/or thought that they had a number for you that they didn't. That is what caused this problem -- it had nothing to do with your "credit worthiness" or report because, again, phone numbers are not part of that calculation/process.

Note that you should now request your free copy of your report and fix anything that is incorrect. If it is from Experian, for example, you can just go online and delete any incorrect phone number associated with your account.

John, that's what I thought.
Letter actually sys, "thank you for applying for the TractorSupply Credit Plan. We are unable to open an account for you at this time. During the processing of your application for credit, we encountered the following missing, invalid or unverifiable information: Unable to verify home phone number"
It is through Equifax so I'll have to look into that - it says I can send a letter.

well it's not rotary dial. I had an elderly relative two years ago who still had a rotary dial phone !!
wonder if that was the issue - they tried to text me some type confirmation of something or another.
Ultimately doesn't matter other than if I really want/need credit some day I don't want this to happen again. I'll figure it out tomorrow. --72.70.xxx.xxx |

Like Robert said, when you want the money they want you to jump up and down for it, but when you don’t need it they want to force it on you.
In 89 I was doing a 1031 exchange and putting down 58%. The bank said I had too many loans however none of those loans exceeded 50% loan to value. To close the deal I had to refinance a couple houses and pay off a couple to get my total amount of mortgages below the required minimum. 58 % was a high risk.
This was at the time banks were making liar loans with little or no verification of your information. --99.23.xxx.x |

I'm a bit different than your average guy, but I would never waste a credit pull for a store credit card like. It generally just isn't as good as some other card.
If I can't get at least $500 in goods or services for free from signing up for a new card (and meeting the spend requirements), then it isn't worth it to me.
Again, I'm not saying those that do are wrong -- that's just how I gauge whether or not to apply for a new card. :)
