I’m in the market for a new coin operated washing machine. The units sold by Home Depot and Lowe’s get mediocre reviews. Any recommendations? --73.159.x.xx

Anything sold at the big box stores is lower quality then any commercial supplier. Huebsch, Speed Queen & Dexter are made in the Us not Mexico. Here a lot of laundromats only buy Dexter commercial machines where when ever a machine is replaced they only buy Dexter. There are two different situations here. If the apartment building is larger then it maybe worth considering buying a heavy commercial front load washing machine and commercial 30 lb gas clothes dryer used. Those commercial grade machines are industrial where those machines take lots of abuse as if ever been to a laundromat then overloading along slamming doors is not uncommon. Consider buying front load machines as 40 per cent less water along with small amount of hot water for the pre wash and wash where the remaining rinses are cold water. A commercial gas clothes dryer drys the clothes in the shortest time along with lint filter can be cleaned once a week. Huebsch & Speed Queen are more expensive upfront where over time will pay off as less repairs. Tenants really abuse laundromat equipment. In the end you get what you pay for. Always better to get a service manual and parts manual with machine so if repairs then easy repairs can fix along if parts are required then go order. Some laundromats go bankrupt where a used machine will have a lot of life left. Whirlpool and Ge are at the bottom of the barrel where a domestic machine with coin box. --147.194.xxx.xx

I only have sfh's, so no laundry here, but for my personal washer, I picked a Speed Queen back in 2012'ish, and it's been great. Not as great as my 90's washer, which would still be trucking along if it hadn't choked on a baby sock and didn't survive the attempt to extract it--- but yeah.

The word on the street, however, is that with the 2016/2017 models, Speed Queen starting messing with their design for water saving features. And getting away from the EPA messing with washers was one of the things that had driven a lot of home laundries to go with Speed Queen in the first place.

I don't know if there's still Speed Queen machines that offer the kind of machine Speed Queen was known for, or if it's all just junk now. But it's something to keep in the back of your mind when you do your research. --137.118.xx.xxx

If you are buying for a larger complex, I would recommend buying card readers instead of coin slots to activate the machines. Coins are bulky and jam if you don't empty them often enough.

Cards allow the tenant to buy say $20 worth of washing and drying....unless they lose the card. Then that is all profit. --24.101.xxx.xx

Steve and I both have the whirlpool top loader and dryers from nome depot. I ve had them in service for 2 years with no issues other than breakins. I put the steel plates over the coin boxes and someone tried breaking it open the other day with no success. I got a Black Friday deal when I got them. --66.30.xx.xx

JohnnyB, when I first considered installing them, I looked into both new & used commercial units for $2.5K - $4K a pair. Mostly I wanted them so tenants wouldn't try putting portable units in their apartments. I decided to go with the ones HD sold. I believe I paid about $1,100.00 a pair including the braided hoses. I got mine thru Home Depot about 4 1/2 years ago. I went with electric dryers & a small electric water heater run off my house meter. Other than setting them up the only thing I did was have my appliance guy change the slides from $1.50 a load to $2.00 a load.

As Lynn said we both have the Whirlpool units & they are working out just fine for me. Since I've had them other replacing a spring for a coin slide, I haven't done anything else to them except occasionally clean the washing machines, blow out the dryer vents every 9-12 months & empty the coin boxes. For me they have proven to be a good investment. I make more than enough from them to offset the extra utility usage & have recouped my initial investment during the second year. --71.174.xxx.xx

I had Maytag set in a 3 family .... nice thing was the neighbors used the machines too. Thing's were paid for in a year since I bought them used.

Then sold them a couple years later (after I sold the building) for $50 less than I paid for them. --76.119.xxx.xxx

Do some YouTube comparisons between the two. Speed Queens are tanks compared with Maytag, which would be more like Chevys. --76.120.xx.xxx
