OK, this may be crazy, but......

We are small businesses, right?

The media's always encouraging people to support (other) small businesses. One way they suggest is to buy gift cards to them.

It just sparked an idea:

Is there some way we can offer "Rent gift cards" to be purchased by family members and/or friends of our residents, as gifts?

If we take electronic payments for rent anyway, maybe there is a way? I'm sure the technology is there. How much paperwork/record-keeping mess would it create? How could we market the idea to family/friends of the residents? Maybe they would put it on their "wish list".

Just thinking off the top of my head, here.

Brilliant idea DJ!

As long as the rent is coming directly to us, they could even send us a check (with the giftcard attached to it, noting the month or partial month it applies to and for whom.)

Otherwise any apps you accept have a place for notation on the payment. They would note who it is for and the period it is for. Done!

As landlords, we could send the tenants via an email attachment or just in the email, with fill in lines to check such as: please appy this gift for ___________________(name) in the amount of ___________ toward rent for the period of _________. If the tenant likes the idea, they can forward the gift certificate to their parent(s). --186.233.xxx.xx

Sounds good but no one can be evicted anyway so why would they do that? --71.104.xx.xxx

So many places offer gift cards in the hope that they don't used. I read something like 83% of all gift cards are not utilized. For the business that sold a card and doesn't have to provide a product - that is nearly 100% profit. That isn't what you are proposing here.

The part that I love about your idea, is having the contact info of someone who cares enough to help pay their son/daughter/brother/sister's rent.

If they are willing to help them out before there is an issue and they are giving contact data now, when an issue does come up in the future - who do you suppose you can call.

That is using the coconut! Genius idea to have emergency contact info updated in a tactful manner --24.101.xxx.xx

Opppps I made a mistake....it is 83% of all cards are utilized.

Sorry.

That is 17% gross profit on sold items not claimed --24.101.xxx.xx

How do you think it could actually be done?

Email a link the resident, saying"forward this link with your gift ideas list"?

The link would take them to my website, where they find instructions to make an electronic payment?

Or take them to a questionnaire to collect basic info(as Ray suggests) then send them (the giver) the info for making a payment by google pay or PayPal?

OR.........?? --70.160.xxx.xxx

Send the idea off to Visa and a few other credit card companies. Maybe they would be interested in the idea and they would know how to set it up.

PayPal could set it up. They advertise anyway, so could add that to their advertising. --76.178.xx.xx

Square!?

I've heard good things about it - does it allow you to enter credit cards numbers manually/remotely, or do they need to be swiped?

Anybody use it? Maybe for move-in funds(or anything else)? --70.160.xxx.xxx

I am wondering if it would be consider rude if you reached out in the emergency contacts and let them know that you are offering gift certificates for part of the rent payments at each of your places.

So if someone offers to give you $50 towards January's rent then all you do is print out a certificate for the contact to hand out to the resident and you just credit the $50 payment in December as advanced rent payment.

January will probably be a harder than normal month this year --24.101.xxx.xx

DJ,

I LOVE it!

Wheels in motion.

The giver can walk into our bank and make a deposit with the getter's name and address on it. Done.

Or pay on our website with credit card. Done.
