Next door in Spokane Washington, one of their "defund the police" city counselors is agitating against the use of police dogs. He says they should not be used because they hurt people. He wants use limited to deadly force situations.

And all this time, I thought the dogs were used to defuse deadly force situations. Bad guys give up before it gets to deadly force because they are afraid of the dogs. A few bad guys get bitten instead of shot dead.

A lot of bad guys give up instead of hiding and shooting at the police.

Statistics for that city are over 2500 dog assisted arrests and fewer than 20 actual bites.

But still, it's not nice to hurt those criminal's feelings. Maybe some trained counselors can reason with them to make them come out and give up their guns. Or, heck, save everyone a lot of trouble and just let them go and get on with their crime spree.

This country has gone crazy. --76.178.xx.xx

I agree, don't put the dog in harms way, just shoot the criminal and be done.

On a more serious note, the government officials have all been overstepping there bounds and need to be shutdown and reminded how they got in office. --73.120.xx.xxx

Would rather get bit than shot. Also if people would stop trying to evade arrest then the dog would be kept on leash.

Of course when I start hearing about police showing up to a riot in front of someone's home and they arrest the homeowner instead of the rioters, I'm wonder what good they actually serve. Luckily this is in limited areas. Thinking a nationwide castle law doctrine bill may be in order.

As an outside contractor working for other landlords and as a landlord myself, often I have to POST a 24 Hour notice to enter a rental because the "tenant" is trying not to pay the rent using the "excuse" something is broken and the landlord refusing to fix it. In Los Angeles a landlords can not evict a tenants if there is something broken in the rental. Such as no hot water or a/c is blowing hot air.

Several times when I let myself into a unit, the tenant calls the cops and reports "someone has broken into their unit and they are in fear for their lives"!

The LAPD (Police) show up and are trigger happy. Had they not had a dog that is 10 times smarter than any officer on the force, I would have been shot dead. Instead the police scream, "police, show yourself or we are going to release the dog".

Local drug sniffer/attack police K9 was struck and killed last week crossing the interstate in hot pursuit of a bad guy.

Charges were added something like "Placing police personnel (the dog) in harm's way". (K9s wear a badge like an officer)

Continued from previous post above.

This last happened to me after I was the handyman/contractor for an apartment complex and under the radar I purchased the property from the owners and then because the so called "Manager".

Several months up the road a tenant not paying rent and answered the summons that they have no heat, reason for not paying rent. So I posted the 24 hour notice to enter and took a picture of it using my time and date camera.

The tenant called my voice mail and I kept the recording they got my notice but refuse to allow me into the unit. SO when the police and their dog arrested me, I had pictures of the notice, my copy of the notice, a copy of the summons for eviction, and a tape recording of the message the tenant left that they won't let me in.

I also had my Deed, Housing Certificate showing I'm the owner and my property tax bill. The police couldn't decide if they should arrest me or let me go. An owner posting a notice and going to fix a heater, a serious situation. I got let go and filed a complaint on the officers...Nothing happened to my tenant of lieing.

Some officer's dog got killed in PA this week. It ran into and elevator door and the elevator shaft was open. Story said they stopped pursuit to help the dog. i don't think dogs should be wasted on a robbery. If it's kidnap or murder then use the dog to flush them out or whatever but not for shop lifting like one that also happened in NJ. And then some one will leave the dog in the car on a hot day and another police dog dies. Don't tell me they are a "tool". MRI shows their brains are set up same as ours. that's a cousin. --71.104.xx.xxx

6 x 6 - castle doctrine very loosely is if someone is in your castle/home, you can shoot them and won't be arrested. The assumption is they are there to do you harm. When I was young, my dad used to say that he'd "drag them inside". --72.70.xxx.xxx

Thank you Nicole. I think it is actually legal here to shoot someone under those circumstances but I didn't know it was called that. --73.120.xx.xxx

To add what Nicole mentioned, you have the right to defend yourself on or in your property (car, home, boat, business, etc.). In some states it even states the right to defend no matter where you are. My thoughts are if everyone has the right to shoot their attacker without breaking the law, then the problem will go away. Either the attacker gets shot or the attacker is afraid of getting shot and decides not to attack. Right now, the police are so shackled that they are not an effective deterrent in persuading a person not to commit a crime. --108.69.xxx.xxx

I am absolutely a dog person. I completely understand the need for police K-9 units. If you have ever met one up close you would know that they are very effective. I was not a criminal or involved in a police matter in any way but if the dog’s handler wasn’t there to pull him back, that dog would have had me for lunch. That being said, they are quite a deterrent. --75.133.xxx.xx

When I was a small child, I was playing with a friend in their front yard. The mom warned us not to go in the back yard, but our ball did, so we did (we were LITTLE!) Their retired Army Dog (German Shephard) was back there and went nuts. Mother tried to bring him inside, lost control and the dog attacked me, knocking me on my face. Everyone agreed that this was lucky as he was going for my throat.

I still have the scars 50 years later (under my hair, thanks goodness.) He tore me UP.

Turned out that he had also bitten other people, including the mailman.

Always been afraid of that breed since then.

PS: the dog was not destroyed but instead donated to the State Police as he was a fully-trained attack dog. --50.82.xxx.xxx
