This is kinda OT but house related. I have a second home. Twice now we have come back to our second home only to find all the garage lights are on. When it happened the first time we made double sure we turned them off when we left. I asked a local electrician how/why they could spontaneously turn on. He thought we were nuts.

Well we had a power outage last week. Power was out for about 30 minutes. When it was restored all the garage lights (which were not on before the outage) turned on.

Does anyone have any idea what causes this or how to fix it?

So guessing you dont have a standard light switch for the garage lights.

Is it sensor switch of some type? --73.40.xx.xx

The light on my garage door motor does the same thing every time we loose power. I’ve never understood why though. I have to open and close the door to reset it. --24.147.xx.xxx

Hmmm....this time only an exterior light which is a motion light but on a switch came on as well as the garage door opener light bulb which can be turned off by a button that controls the opener. So those at least one of those does have a motion sensor.

In the past we had a couple of fluorescent light fixtures (plugged in but operated by a wall switch) come on. But maybe we did somehow just leave them on accidentally because the power being restored didn’t effect them this time.

The two that did come on which we witnessed both would have eventually turned off so it may just be operator error after all. When I asked the question I thought the other lights came on this time too but I just verified they did not. --75.89.xxx.xxx

Simple, most motion sensors are hardwired so if the power goes off, then quickly comes back on again -- the lights will stay on -- and the motion feature is overriden. Like turning the switch off, then on again... --47.155.xx.xxx

I agree with Robert J. I had a motion sensor light, and there was a special sequence (something like ON, then off for 8 seconds, the ON, quickly OFF, then ON) to take the light off of sensor mode temporarily. I could never remember the sequence, and usually scrambled to find the instructions.

If there's some sort of sensor, along with the circuit behind it, then you can't really rely on it to do exactly what you expect it to do. --71.233.xxx.xx

I have a ceiling fan light just like this. The light always goes on when the power comes back on after an outage. --98.13.xx.xxx

hold the switch click it up a few and wait

if it is hard wired it will not work as a motion sensor.

there is a gismo in it --66.97.xxx.xxx
