the other thread got me to thinking what others do.
I don't like dark ... I like light. Consequently, I've always had exterior doors with the top half being glass. I'll be replacing two doors in the next few months and wondered if others like solid, 1/2 glass or the 15 pane basically all glass.
I also don't like not being able to see who's at the door. Not sure tenants care either way as I can't recall any comment ever on a door.
only issue I ever had was one time they pulled the molding off around the window, pushed the pane aside and reached in to unlock the door. I have no idea how they accomplished this. They also said, naturally, they didn't. They had no idea how it happened !! --72.70.xxx.xxx |

If security is an issue I prefer just a couple of lites or a fan tail glass at the top for the primary door. If security is not an issue I like a door with oval glass & 1 or 2 sidelights. For the secondary door I like to use a 9 lite door. --71.174.xxx.xx |

Doors with glass are beautiful, I like the leaded glass ones, that make the house look oh so pretty, however, in my neighborhood, it's an invitation to break in. As for 'seeing' I use solid doors with a 'peeper' viewer. Wide angle, sees outside safely before you open the door. Easy to install. You have to adjust the height for the tenants, and sometimes I install 2 (upper and down a bit) if there are small kids. The homes of the 20's and 30's used to have those nice tiny windows, with a 'door' on the inside to look out. Very cute, but I don't think they make those anymore do they? --72.199.xx.xxx |

I’ve used the 1/3 glass for security. Basically the top 6 lights instead of 9. You could still break in but not nearly as east to reach the knob. --107.77.xxx.xx |

I go to a plastics supply company and order a 1/2" thick plastic custom fit acrylic or lexan clear transparent or opaque -- frame it and for security install it over the current class. --47.155.xx.xxx |

Robert, that's actually a really good idea ... and easier for them (or us when they don't) to clean. --72.70.xxx.xxx |

no idea how it happened and no police report, obviously someone got in so you would think they would call the cops but no just go about there day then act like no idea.If they really had no idea you would heard from them right away, but you knew that --72.231.xxx.xxx |

For my house, I like glass on the door, for a rental, more glass = more breakage. Generally the top half circle or just a couple of lights at the top don't generally get broken, but they could. I have some old doors with glass that I replaced with lexan. You can't see through them anymore but the light shines through. --66.30.xx.xx |

In a few places that really cried out for a screen door, we opted instead for a door with a window that actually opened, and had a screen and everything. Expensive for a rental but cheaper than being in the screen door business.
For the rest of our place we just use the stock HD doors with a glass window for viewing and light.

The question is
What do good prospects want?
I learned that women want deadbolts, and I know Momma picks the house, so we added deadbolts. As we hand the keys to new residents we often hear how they like the deadbolts.
The glass panel on new exterior doors is simply sandwiched in place between a plastic frame on the outside and a matching frame on the inside. Bad guys can simply pry off/break the outside plastic frame and push in the glass panel.
For nicey nice homes I use half light with leaded glass insert. An extra $100 gets me a WOW! My adult children tell me ovals are for old ladies.

Sorry, I did not complete my thought...
Some prospects, esp women, will see the danger and lack of privacy with a half lite door and walk away.

For rentals I like the solid steel doors. One less thing to get broken. --70.178.x.xx |

My rentals are all in a big city. Window in door=security risk. Nobody cares about natural light--curtains and blinds are ALWAYS closed. --104.230.xxx.xx |

Sorta Blonde,
Is this the sort of tiny window with a door that you were referring to? This is only $44 at this site for the steel parts only. The glass window part would probably have to be custom made.

Yes! Sir Walter, it's exactly what I was trying to explain. Hey, and it's not all that expensive. Glass is easy. You could cut your own, but you don't really need the glass. Didn't know they made just the window. I might install one in my own door. Just cut and insert. Thanks for the link! Interesting other stuff in their catalog. --72.199.xx.xxx |
