Local better door company wants to sell me a fiberglass entry door. There is a wood door there now that fits poorly and tenant has to put up masking tape on windy days to stop drafts. Moving furniture can damage a door and I don't see a way to fix fiberglass. They are long term tenants but change furniture now and then. If we get "B" energy prices will skyrocket. --71.104.xx.xxx

I usually get steel doors. But the frames are wood, so even if the door survives abuse, sometimes the poor frames get mangled. Steel doors can be dented, though. --137.118.xx.xxx

I use steel doors. If the door gets dented, a bit of Bondo and paint and I'm back in business.

A fiberglass one can be fixed with a fiberglass patch kit, but it is slightly more difficult.

the steel doors are cheaper too and home depot sells steel door slabs so you can replace it without replacing the jambs. --66.30.xx.xx

I have a few fiberglass ones, they cost just a little more than steel, but so far I like them. I find them more durable than steel which gets dented very easily. The fiberglass has a little bit of give to it and is thicker than steel so it seems to hold up better. Wood doors while sturdy, have to be painted more often, tend to split/crack in the middle, and the paint gets nicked relatively easily.

I would say go with the fiberglass, I think you will find it holds up fairly well. If it does need repair, you can use bondo on both steel and fiberglass. --64.130.xx.xxx

Thank you. I will ask for a steel door. I don't have anyone else to work on doors right now. Handyman has gotten sloppy and lost patience with doors. Cabinet maker guy is too busy. Door company is a mom and pop and kids and really good people who have available time. I got two garage door openers replaced and the others maintained and checked in the past week. I can't get a locksmith to fix my own front door and I can't use it so I am hoping these folks can just remove and replace it. 1948 vintage lock and it has locked me out in the rain so it's never used. It actually slammed shut on me with no wind so I had to block it with something if I used it. T has made my 401 K very good so i am doing a few things. Replacing my garage roof too as it needs it. --71.104.xx.xxx

Miss Ally, I personally prefer fiberglass doors over either wood or steel doors. Unlike wood doors they don't split swell or rot. Unlike steel doors they don't rust or dent. They can be painted, stained with special kit and are easy to fix if they get dinged.

IMO it's equally as important to use a good solid frame, decent weather stripping, sturdy hinges and a good knob / lock. Of course it goes without saying that any door needs to be properly installed. --71.174.xxx.xx

Just to add. If it is not under a covered porch. We usually go with a full composite frame and molding.

Or at a minimum what's called a no rot frame. Which is composite about 12" up from the bottom. --73.40.xx.xx

Ray, The fiberglass doors have the energy star rating that most steel doors don't have so they are sold as energy savings over steel. --64.130.xx.xxx

We have a Therma-Tru fiberglass door on our personal house...22 years old. Best door I ever had. Some of the parts are still wood. If you get one of these, follow the staining/painting instructions that come with the door. Our builder simply stained it like they do wood..and it flaked after 5 years. I then stripped it and did it the right way using Therma-Tru's finishing system and it's now been in great shape for 16 years. Fiberglass won't rust. --99.92.xxx.xxx

Thank you all. It is under a little overhang and will have a storm door in front of it. I will hope that it comes fully stained with the correct stain for it or I won't buy it. --71.104.xx.xxx

Couple things to consider. A pre finished stained fiberglass door cost a lot more.

Otherwise get a plain one. But if staining the slight textured finish takes the stain better.

This way you can stain it yourself and pick color. And you can touchup if ever damaged.

Prefinished one you will not be able to touchup or refinish. --73.40.xx.xx

So the door got measured today. I can't be staining and painting this door. They have an 11 year warranty and it will be already framed. If this is a mistake I will find out soon. Tenants have been there many years with no sign of leaving so it won't get bashed around too much. It will have two lights at the top and a peep hole so tenant can see who is at the door. --71.104.xx.xxx
