Any advise in getting the sewer line from a townhouse to the city line cleaned out. The issues with clogs are on my side. FYI paid $5000 2.5 years ago to have line replaced, front yard dug up. I thik I was ripped off and problem still exists. Thoughts/advise?

If this were my problem I'd send down the line a recording sewer camera with locator and view every inch of the sewer line, marking off where the problem areas are located.

Then with one of my machines I'd snake the line and remove any root intrusions. If it were only roots, then I'd use a root foaming treatment to kill the roots for up to 2 years.

If it isn't roots, then on the surface I'd mark where and what the issues are.

In my last townhouse job I found an outside floor drain tied into the sewer system instead of the storm drain. When the tenants/owners hose down the common area, they push the dirt into the "surface drain grill" the clogs up the sewer line. --47.155.xx.xxx

How do you know the issues are on your side?

Did you have a camera run to see the problem?

Did a tenant flush something down they shouldn't have?

You should not be having any problems after only 2.5 years of a new line being put in.

Did you supervise when the new line was put in?

I know it is time consuming but I always like to be there when a job is being done so that I can observe exactly what is being done. I learn a lot this way as well.

Was the proper size line installed along with adequate cleanouts?

Are you sure the issue is on your side, I understand the clog is, but could it be from a belly in the line just on the municipality’s side? I’d camera the line and look for standing water, roots, broken pipe etc, or it could be from flushing wipes or feminine products etc. --174.242.xx.xxx

need more info on the townhome. are all units on one line or does each unit tie into the line separately?

A decent camera is only 200.00 run one or have your maint man do it.

How many times on this site have we heard how the plumber didn't glue the joints????

Was the town water people there when this was done? How much line was replaced? from unit all the way to the main tap? --99.103.xxx.xxx

No permit puled. Paid Roto rutter $600 for them to take a camera down. there is blockage on my side. Sidewalk is sinking. I paid plumber $5000 to replace pipe, but I don't think he did what was needed. To many years have passed to pursue him, plus out of business with lots of complaints against him. twice has sewage back up into basement. Don't want it to happen again, so biannual sewer cleanouts. Any advice on who to hire/look for. --108.56.xxx.xx

my gosh 600? just for camera? the ROTO ROOTER company here does 99.00 and includes the jetting... my gosh that's outrageous.

I suggest calling the license and permits for your town-- ask them on the QT for who THEY would use. An inspector should be able to tell you who they like the best.

Laura knowing if the problem is on your connection of sewer line side might cover you if you could have the city look at it. (They do have the very best in camera's) Would let them know you had the line replaced and with that in mind maybe the problem is theirs. It's worth a try.

Our last problem was roots growing into our line from the city sewer side. That is a 10 inch line. They took a 6 inch pipe and shoved it into the city side to clear the root problem and reconnect our line to their new one. Didn't dig anything but exposure hole. no walkway no roadway. Cheap 600.00 all in-- for us and they reimbursed us for backhoe guy. --99.103.xxx.xxx

I had a long example and I lost internet connection.

So, I will say this, I agree with myob.

If you do end up with it on you then supervise the job. Make sure an inspector comes out and inspects before backfill.

I would get a few estimates.

If you have any other properties that need sewer line work then I would ask if I could get a better price if I gave them multiple jobs. I did that and got the complete line replaced at my rental and a 8 foot section repaired at my house, both for $1200 total. --73.120.xx.xxx

I got think that maybe they didn't put the crushed gravel down around the drain line because of the sidewalk. That could be casing a belly in your line.

Did the camera show standing water in the line? --24.101.xxx.xx

myob, just because it's under the sidewalk does not mean it's the city's responsibility. In our area, we are responsible right up to the "main"...in one of my rentals that's under the middle of the street!

I agree with Robert, send a camera down and get a recording on a CD....should only cost about $100-$125.

Get a LICENSED plumber from a reputable company...check Angie's List if you're not sure who's reputable. Check BBB also. Sounds like they're going to have to dig it up again. If the pipe was replaced and the sidewalk is sinking, something was not done right and I would not simply clear the blockage and assume the problem is gone...the camera should tell exactly what's going on. --99.92.xxx.xxx

I sent a camera down. Instead of replacing pipe again, I plan to snake every 2 years? I am hiring a local very reputable company. Not going to let cost be a factor as it normally is! They are charing me $395 for first 90 minutes. --108.56.xxx.xx

Doing that every 2.5 years $395, is cheaper than fixing again (last time picked cheapest for $5000) and may/maynot work. --108.56.xxx.xx
